Traditions: The Kuchinawa have little documented traditions. They are known to be made up of mostly poison users, and their Fuuinjutsu is renown even if no one is quite sure what they do with all those seals. Other than those two traits, they don't seem to share many things in common. They aren't all proficient in one area, and they don't all specialize in a particular subject.

They are more well known for their personalities. The Clan holds to the old ways, that being a high regard to elders and rules and are notoriously formal. They're a harsh sort, with no use for weaklings or free-thinkers either in their own Clan or in the people around them. There is a rigid control inside the Clan, but since they mostly keep to themselves no one is quite sure what inter-politics go on.

Clan History: The Kuchinawa Clan is an old and long mistrusted and/or feared Clan. Renowned for their high-handed ways, and disregard for even their own members well being or lives, they are perhaps rightly feared and reviled. Long ago, they resided within Konohagakure. However, their cruelty, and ambitious goals soon caused them to be exiled.

From that point on, the Kuchinawa Clan wandered. They could find no Village that would accept them, either for fear of retribution from Konoha or from disdain of their ways. That was, until they went to Otogakure. Once there, the Clan head met with the Kage, promising that if they were given a home with no judgment on their ways and respectable power in the Village, they would provide Oto with a strong kekkei genkei. Of course, Oto cared not for their less than humane history and happily accepted. Every child born after that day became a shinobi, no matter their aptitude or wishes. And with that pact, they sealed their placement as one of the more prominent Oto Clans.

Kekkei Genkei Information

The Kuchinawa Clan is an old and ill-reputed Clan, largely in part to their extensive bloodline. Their Kekkei Genkei does not have a name, for it is composed of too many parts. There are many facets to their bloodline, and they all revolve around one creature. The serpent.

Their bloodline is something akin to a relationship. It is as if Kuchinawa Clan members are more snake than human, as if their ancestors slithered along the ground instead of walking upright on two feet. The most prominent rumor, that the Clan themselves like to spread, is that many millennia ago, the Snake God roamed the earth and fell in love with a daring human. She was believed to have shown no fear in the face of a God, and to have brazenly stood up to this great being. The Snake God was enthralled by this intense woman, and he took her as his mate turning the woman into a serpent so that they could live together. However, when the woman began producing offspring instead of taking on the shape of a snake her children were human. Their minds however, were most certainly that of a snake.

As the children grew, they began to appear more and more snakelike. With strange skills that no mere human should have. Their bodies were more animal than not, and their blood, the blood of a Snake God, burned in their veins. It is said that the main line of the Kuchinawa Clan descends directly from this woman and her offspring. For this reason, it is a common belief that all snakes are in some way related to the Clan members, and are family. Which may explain their ability to converse with their extended family.

All members of the Kuchinawa Clan have toxic blood signifying their bond with their poisonous brethren, from the moment they begin to form in their mother’s wombs their red blood cells begin to produce this deadly blood. Each member’s blood is different, made from a separate mix of chemicals and energies. And once spilt, the blood is used in many different ways to the benefit of Clan members. Mainly though, their blood is a strong corrosive acid that can eat through skin and even the most reinforced metal. If the blood gets on soft tissue, like eyes or other such things, it can quickly do irreparable damage.

While developing inside their mothers, babies are exposed to their toxic blood as well as the babies own and many times their fragile systems cannot take the strain. Most births end in miscarriage and the birthrate for the Clan is dismally low. However once born, children of the Kuchinwa Clan seem to grow steadily stronger immune systems at a rapid pace. With their first immunity being towards their own blood, damping the effects of the toxic substance on themselves until the blood merely causes small burns when in contact with their skin. Quickly, they become immune to most poisons, drugs, illnesses, chemicals, herbs and medicines as their blood quickly eats up anything put into their bloodstream. At higher ranks the member's bodies become so accustom to poisonous substances that they begin to crave them, going through withdrawals and other physical symptoms when not imbibing enough. Because their bodies have such a need for toxic substances at this level, their physiology changes ever so slightly once more until the affected toxin is not only nullified but also adds to their vitality. That is to say, their bodies embrace the toxin and instead of being adversely affected it is almost as if they are healed, in direct proportion to the lethality of the poison.

While their poisonous blood can be used in many miraculous ways, the great tool of destruction is also a bane. A tool that must be used carefully, for it is just as likely to burn the handler as it is the enemy. Kuchinawa Clan members have an immunity towards their spilt blood, it does not eat away at their skin as it does anyone else. However, this is only a superficial immunity. While coursing through their veins, the blood is constantly in contact with their inner body, and there are many stories of a Clan member who’s blood increased in potency too fast for their body to adjust to. In these cases, the blood will very slowly begin to eat them from the inside out. In a most painful and incurable manner.

Similarly their blood has one last function. Kuchinawa members are adapt at creating jutsu based off their poisonous blood, for it is common in battle for everyone to get wounded and what better weapon than one provided to you by your enemy? Helping them in this is the fact that the energies and chakra which fill their blood allow a very minor level of manipulation varying by rank. For more complicated control, there are several jutsu which utilize spilt blood, and due to the chakra concentrated within they usually require no hand seals.

Clan members often manifest physical traits in common with snakes. Elongated canines which greatly resemble fangs. Vibrant facial markings that are akin to the marks on snakes or other poisonous animals which loudly proclaim them dangerous. Forked tongues which cause sibilance. Small slender scales coating the skin if one were to look close enough. Eyes that range from vibrant colors but are never a normal shade with pupils that compact into slits when the member is under duress or feeling strong emotions. These eyes have the curious effect of at times being incredibly hypnotic. It has nothing to do with Genjutsu, but more the visceral sense of an apex predator staring through those slitted eyes towards their prey. It is glaringly obvious at those times, that these shinobi are not entirely human.

These physical features are not just for show, the Kuchinawa are more snakelike than even their appearances claim. They share many senses with serpents. Eyes that allow them to see in the dark, as well as varying degrees of heat sensitivity. Their sense of smell is much keener than a normal humans, and most can utilize their tongues to taste scents in the air. Their hearing is aided by vibrations carried through the ground and air, and a less noticeable trait is that their tactile senses are increased one-hundred fold. Which is both a hindrance and a gift.

The physical features of a Kuchinawa differ even further from what is normal. Upon reaching maturity, most members form “fangs” or snake teeth beneath their fingernails. With the flex of the hand, the tooth can slide free and be used to inject an enemy with their own personal poison. This poison is produced by small sacs beneath the nails, and it bares resemblance to the members toxic blood, although it is commonly diluted with any multitude of poisons the member has on hand.

Limitations: Due to their powerful abilities, there are several limitations and drawbacks.

- Kuchinawa Members are low in number due to the danger of their bloodline. Most die before being born, and there are deaths when babies' bodies cannot handle the poison inside them. Even after that point, there are deaths throughout the other training methods the Kuchinawa employ to ensure that their members are strong.

- Kuchinawa Members have a certain reputation that proceeds them. They are known to be cruel, and this is more than just the normal animosity or cutting remarks. They are known to harm comrades if they feel it is justified, let alone the rumors of what goes on inside their compound walls. It is generally felt that they are not wholly human, and even amongst the callous ninja of Oto this is something everyone is aware of. Because of this they are not well liked, no one wants to go on a mission with someone who they can't trust at their back.

- Their eyes which are so keen and useful are also rather light-sensitive. Bright or glaring lights can very easily stun or blind them. And their physical differences have more drawbacks. Their tactiles senses are increased, which causes them to feel pain more acutely. They can be overloaded with strong scents, and air pressure can incapacitate their hearing to some extent. At Chuunin rank their bodies begin to need poisons, and they cannot go longer than a week without somehow consuming or else their physical prowess is effected.

- Their poisonous blood itself is their greatest limitation. The stronger a member grows, the more powerful their blood becomes. One would think this beneficial, however it is not guaranteed that their bodies adapt as quickly as their blood changes. This results more often than not in a slow death, or at the very least internal damage as the poison eats away at their insides, deterred just enough by their immunity to make the process unhurried.
