This guide is for those of you who have vista, but want it to run as fast as xp does. disable the user account control, go to start>control panal and switch to classic view, then go to user accounts and click on "turn user account control on or off" this will stop windows bugging u every 5 minutes when ur trying to change settings or install anything, not to mention the fact that alot of games require you to run them as an administrator and this can be easily overlooked when your trying play a game at 4am after 10 beers and kebab!, now restart before you do anything else. DISABLE SUPERFETCH you can do this by going into your search box on the start menu and typing services.msc, press enter, now in that list find superfetch, click stop, then right clik on it and click properties, then in the drop down box click disable, this will free up ram from caching which is very good if your a gamer, the ram will work more like it did on xp now and will stop things such as laggy play for the first few lives on bf2 etc etc etc. Disable windows sidebar just right click on the taskbar icon and click settings, and uncheck where it says start with windows, done, this will speed up the time it takes for your desktop to become "active" you can always run sidebar from the start menu if needed. ok now go back to the search box in your start menu and type msconfig, press enter, now under services, hide all the microsoft ones if you have the option and uncheck all the boxes for programs you dont need, disabling windows defender is fine and infact is one of the things that will give you a faster boot (start up of ur pc). also, unless u really love the new vista theme, switch it to basic, right click on your desktop, then click personalize, then click on the colour and appearance option and select windows vista basic, you also might want to click effects and remove anything fancy. ok now go to start and click on computer, now right click the C: drive and click properties, then disable indexing of drive for faster searches, this only uses up more of your ram to make ur hdd find things quicker, it doesnt really help raw system performance. also in the C: drive properties, click tools, then defragment now, once that has opened, uncheck the box that says run on schedule, this will kill your performance when it runs on its own and can be very scary if it happens while playing games or running hungry apps. NOW just before you finish go the control panal and click power options, now change you power plan to high performance (this lets your computer use more power for better performance) Increase your SATA HDD performance! you can do this by going into device manager (right click computer click properties then click advanced hardware on the left, then go to hardware and device manager) once your in device manager, open the hdd menu and right click your primary hdd and click properties, then click on policies, now check the box that says "enable advanced performance" Ok and also just to note, if you type "msconfig" into your search/run box you can select the services tab and remove any unwanted background processes from starting on your machine, checking hide all microsoft services is a nice way of making sure u dont remove the wrong thing, but you can also click on the start up tab for a more in depth look at your startup and removing windows defender from that list will increase the amount of free ram you have by a fair bit and will give u a quicker start up too! SAVE LOADS OF HDD SPACE, vista's system restore doesnt let you change how much space it uses, however, type cmd into your search/run box and in the command screen, type in: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=2GB (saying u want it to be 2gb, this can be anything u want but not lower than 300mb, this also assuming u are running vista on your C: drive, if not, change the letter accordingly) there is probably a few things ive missed out here but that should get you on the right track for a faster machine. god bless all you vista users |
