Bahevik Factbook

Bahevian Geography

Located between the northern steppes of Mongolia and the Lake Baikal region of Russia, Bahevik is an environmentally stunning region with wide expanses of grasslands, steppes, and desert. With no strategic coastline and very little arable land, Bahevik remains generally untouched by vestiges of the industrial revolution. With a desert climate, Bahevik is a land of extremes, with the temperatures regularly exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the brief summer and temperatures plummeting to below -30 degrees during the lengthy winter. The largest point is Bald Mountain, a foreboding peak that rises over 6000 meters above the arid landscape. With little precipitation, the large population of Bahevik subsists on root crops and other fine starches.

Bahevian Economy

The Bahevian economy is fueled by small scale farmers and herders as well as arms manufacturing. Bahevik is remarkable among other nations because it is the only third world country in the world that has never received money from the WA Economic Council. Indeed, even though GDP per capita hovers around $56, the protein-starved populace are seemingly content to subsist on so little--indeed it is a point of national pride. There is no measurable rate of poverty, but no matter where the line is drawn, all citizens of Bahevik are in basically the same dire economic condition.

Despite the impoverished population, Bahevik has a small, but elite, portion of the economy that specializes in unconventional arms manufacturing. Little is known about the true nature of the weapons trade, but Bahevik is rumored to have created such deadly monstrosities as the razor flail, the radioactive molten penetrator, and the gamma ray bomb. Bahevik is rumored to have contracts with militaries of several other nations. Bahevik has no national currency, though single grains of rice are often treated as gold because they are so precious in the dry climate of Bahevik. The rest of the world has categorized Bahevians as "Iron Fist Consumerists."

History of Bahevik

Settled by Ancient Slavic peoples in the 9th century, residents of Bahevik have lived under a code of mandatory and enforced nudity since the founding of the nation. Because of the uselessness of the land, Bahevik has remained almost completely isolated from the rest of the world.

The Bahevians were "discovered" by Portuguese traders in the 15th century, but portrayed as ruthless savages with a penchant for self mutilation and a fetish for torture (perhaps quite accurately). Civilized society evaded Bahevik until the rise of the Order of Chernobeg, which occurred in the early 20th century. In 1918, the Order instituted the "third born rule" to control both population growth and the population. Under this harsh policy, the third born of every family unit was conscripted into the Order of Chernobeg to be trained in military and sadistic arts.

The only foreign army to attempt an invasion of Bahevik was the U.S.S.R. under Stalin. Three divisions of Russian infantry descended into the northern valleys, but were turned back after meeting psychotic resistance from the zealous residents of Bahevik. Bahevik has never invaded another nation, though the Order of Chernobeg is ordered to have covert operatives in all 195 countries. The high priest of the Order of Chernobeg, Ruul Bakhaivay, has publicly criticized and insulted every head of state in the world.

Bahevian Military

There is one omnipresent branch of the Bahevian military: the Order of Chernobeg. This shadowy force, aptly named after the Bahevian god of darkness, runs both police and special forces. Despite its size, Bahevik maintains few conventional fighting forces. Instead, the Order is composed of the third-born individuals of Bahevian society who are isolated from society after birth and trained by priests of Chernobeg. The Order has been known to use unconventional weaponry such as toxins, nuclear crossbows, and combat shovels to enforce the iron rule of the government. Each member of the Order, like the rest of the populace, is subject to mandatory nudity.

Government and Political Structure

It is unclear if there is any one power that actually controls Bahevik--it is said to be ruled by the twin deities of Chernobeg and Diabolous. The capital city of Screwtape is constructed within the slope of Bald Mountain, and is home to the high priests of Chernobeg and Diabolous.

Bahevik is divided into tribes, held together mostly by family ties. The judiciary, or what can be called the judiciary, is composed of local tribal elders and the priests of the Orders. This oppressive and radical government model came about as a result of centuries of deprivation and cruelty stretching back to the 12th century. Absolute equality is put above all other values.

People and Population

The population of Bahevik is estimated to number over 6 billion, with half the population below the age of 20. With life expectancy hovering at a meager 36, and a literacy rate of 4%, the population tends to be viewed more as natural resources than as individual human beings by the ruling orders. There is little to no immigration, though emigration has traditionally been high despite the efforts of the Order of Chernobeg to prevent the population from leaving Bahevik alive. The national religion is based on the worship of the twin gods Chernobeg and Diabolous. Sociologists believe these deities are rooted in ancient Slavic myth, and many of the populace is descended from Slavic peoples. English, after 1967, is the national language, though some enclaves still speak the ancient Slavic tongue.

Communications

The nation of Bahevik is one of the most isolated and inaccessible on Earth. Infrastructure is limited to dirt and brick trails for carts and horse traffic. Bahevik does have one modern airport in the Salt flats outside Screwtape, which serves as the sole port of entry for the entire nation. Internet, television, and even phone service is unheard of, and the borders of Bahevik have been sealed since 1897.
