One of the hardest things to get used to in England had to be the food, Saraswati thought as she sat at her table in her skirts of navy blue, picking at her food - pot roast with mashed potatoes covered in gravy and accompanied by a mixture of carrots and green beans. She glanced around at the girls around her. They seemed to be enjoying their meals well enough. Saraswati sighed, suddenly feeling a wave of homesickness wash over her. Not only did the British eat meat like there was no tomorrow, their food was also terribly bland to the point where it made her want to gag. Saraswati had spoken to the kitchen staff personally, informing them that she was vegetarian but clearly, they hadn't heard a word she said. Perhaps they had been too busy staring at her dark skin, she thought darkly. Ever since, though, Saraswati had simply just ignored whatever meat they put on her plate and just ate whatever she could of everything else. Really, where were the spices, the curry, and the chutney? The most they had was perhaps one little shaker of ground black pepper, which added just a little flavour, but she preferred something stronger. Even the variety of tea here was different and she had yet to see any rice. She dearly missed her mother's wonderful cooking and the smell of mixed spices in the kitchen. |
