Eleanor Griffiths![]() Student Age: 16 Height: 5’3 Weight: 136 lb. Build and Carriage: Curvy but not overweight. Hair Color and Style: Dark red, long, and wavy. Often wears it up in a chignon but sometimes lets it down. Eye Color: Green. Has reading glasses. Race/Ethnicity: English with some Irish blood. Complexion: Fair-skinned and smooth. Indepth Description: Eleanor’s most striking feature is probably her long, wavy copper-coloured hair, especially when she wears it down all the way to her waist. However, her hair is so long that she often puts it up into a bun at the nape of the neck – both because it’s convenient and because it’s in fashion. She is considered to possess a beautiful, oval face with large (although a little hooded) green eyes, full lips, and a straight nose. Nevertheless, next to her younger sister Elizabeth with her white skin and golden curls, Eleanor is considered to be more on the plain side. As for her build, Eleanor is of average height, albeit a little on the shorter side, and is fairly curvy. She often cinches her waist using a corset to help give her a more hourglass figure underneath the various dresses Eleanor possesses in her armoire. In terms of fashion, Eleanor enjoys keeping up with the latest fashions but not as much as some of the other girls her age. For Eleanor, if she has enough interesting books, some music, and some tea, she can be perfectly content, even if she were dressed like a peasant. Country of Origin: England. Date of Birth: June 16, 1888 Parents: » Dr. James Griffiths; father; 42; physician. » Lillian Griffiths (née Daugherty); mother; deceased. Siblings and other relatives: » Elizabeth “Lizzy” Griffiths; 12; sister. » Michael Griffiths; 9; brother (twin of Gabriel). » Gabriel Griffiths; 9; brother (twin of Michael). » Hazel Griffiths; 44; paternal aunt; spinster; former school teacher. » Anne Wright; 20; cousin. Close Friends: » Amelia Keegan; 17. » Olive Colbert; 16. Character History: Eleanor was born to Dr. James and Lillian Griffiths on June 16, 1888, in London, England. Growing up, she lived a prosperous and happy life, never knowing want or need. Her father, a prominent London physician, had plenty of wealthy clients to help feed his fortune, and her mother, a somewhat distant relative of nobility, had a small inheritance of her own after her own wealthy father died. Consequently, Eleanor was privately tutored in literature, history, philosophy, basic mathematics, and science, while Eleanor’s mother Lillian taught her other things, such as how to play the piano, how to cook, embroidery, dance, and etiquette. As much as Lillian attempted to prepare Eleanor to be a proper lady, Eleanor was far more interested in her father’s books. While she dutifully learned all her mother had to teach her and went to all the parties her mother forced her to go to, Eleanor spent much of her free time reading about science and philosophy. Exasperated, Lillian eventually gave up and let her daughter read about what Lillian considered men’s subjects. During this time, Eleanor’s younger sister Elizabeth (nicknamed “Lizzy”) was born. At first, Eleanor resented the attention Elizabeth received, especially when Elizabeth proved to be far more apt at music, art, and other feminine areas than her. To further her jealousy, Elizabeth developed into a cute little girl with beautiful golden curls, shining green eyes, and pale skin, causing Eleanor to feel a little more on the plain side, despite being considered to be a growing beauty herself. However, when Elizabeth grew up a little more (when she was about nine and Eleanor was thirteen), she and Eleanor began to share some similar interests, particularly in music and literature, and they began to be much closer. When Eleanor was seven, Lillian gave birth to identical twin boys, who were named Michael and Gabriel (after the two archangels in the Christian Bible). However, there were complications during the birth and the birth proved to be too difficult for Lillian to handle, leading to her death. Afterwards, the family was devastated. Eleanor’s father, busy with his work and still grieving for his wife, sent a message to his elder sister, Hazel Griffiths, an unmarried school teacher, and invited her to live with him in order to watch and care for his children. Hazel accepted, leaving her job and immediately moving in. At first, the transition was quite difficult. The baby twins alone were difficult to handle, and Eleanor and Elizabeth were quickly growing into young ladies and needed to be brought up properly so they could find suitable husbands and marry in the future. Eleanor’s father was away often because of his work. Nevertheless, Hazel did her best to bring them all up properly, ensuring they were well fed, dressed nicely, educated, and strictly disciplined if they ever crossed the line (although the twins proved to be the biggest troublemakers – Hazel often credits the twins for the growing number of lines on her face). However, Eleanor was also one that Hazel had to keep an eye on. Hazel disapproved of Eleanor’s reading of science and philosophy much more than Lillian did. Citing that Eleanor needed a stricter education and upbringing and that Hazel had little time what with the twins being a handful, Hazel suggested to James that Eleanor be sent to a boarding school. James was reluctant to part with his eldest (and favoured, although he denies it) daughter but Hazel was particularly adamant about the issue. Eventually, James agreed to send Eleanor off but only if Hazel found a school of good character and standing; and thus, at the age of fifteen, Eleanor was sent to Pennington School for Girls. Personality: Cool, calm, and collected, Eleanor is a confident young woman uninterested in frivolity and parties. Growing up as the eldest daughter to a prominent physician, she became very interested in her father’s work, often spending hours at a time in her father’s study, reading his books and playing with his spare stethoscope. That’s not to say she dislikes parties. It is simply that Eleanor feels she benefits more from reading and studying than from dancing and socializing. However, she often receives sharp criticism from her Aunt Hazel for ignoring her “womanly duties”. “Don’t become an old, lonely spinster like me. You’d do well to find yourself a good man to marry but no man will want a woman who only knows about science and other dangerous subjects,” her Aunt Hazel told her before she left for Pennington. Despite this, Eleanor consciously ignores her aunt’s words and still pursues her interests when she has the spare time and the resources (for finding such things in a girls’ school is quite difficult). And while she often receives the attention of men because of her pretty face, Eleanor prefers having intelligent conversation over mindless flirting, and she wishes to become not merely a housewife but a woman who can use her mind to accomplish things. Still, sometimes Eleanor’s cool personality comes off as arrogant and dismissive so she often finds it difficult to find good female friends with similar interests and dreams. Her closest confidant is her cousin, Anne Wright, who she writes to regularly in Liverpool, as well as her hometown friends, Amelia Keegan and Olive Colbert. Even if she does come off as cold at times, Eleanor is really a polite and kind person, who (like her father) wants to help others (although, unlike her father, she cares not for class distinctions). However, sometimes, it takes some time to completely see this side of her and to realize that her dreams aren’t always completely selfish. Strengths: Intelligent with a strong interest in the sciences and philosophy; a competent pianist; confident; unfailingly polite; believes in fairness and equality; unafraid to speak her mind; good with animals and children. Weaknessses: Somewhat reluctant to socialize, leading others to think she is cold; stubborn; a perfectionist; critical of girls (and sometimes men) she believes to be “air-headed”; morally and religiously uptight; terrible at sewing (anything involving a needle and thread). Interests: Biology; astronomy; philosophy; tea with biscuits; music; plays; reading. Pet Peeves: People who think of nothing but fashion, parties, etc. (“airheads”, she calls them); when people touch her hair; when her Aunt Hazel pesters her to become more ladylike so she can find a good husband and be a proper housewife. Quirks: Cares more about her hair than her face; cares more about books than her hair; when she’s full, she picks at her food until someone takes it away; twirls her hair and bites her lip when she’s nervous. Skills: Reading comprehension; writing; understanding topics in biology; stargazing; playing the piano; cooking. Sample Post: [Note: from THIS SITE.] There was a little sparrow outside the window, fluttering from branch to branch with its head cocking from side to side, listening for potential threats, before flying away. It was such a small thing yet the world could not live without it. But even if that one sparrow died, another would replace it and the world would keep on turning. It was a sad yet also thrilling thought. Was it the same with humans, too? No matter how small and insignificant everyone was, how much of an impact could they make on the world? Individually, probably not much but altogether, it made a big difference. Suddenly, the sound of bounding steps on the stairs caused Yuko to snap out of her meandering thoughts, and almost immediately after, a young woman emerged from the door wearing quite ugly and tattered clothes, in Yuko's humble opinion. Nevertheless, this stranger had a pretty face and with a little work, her long dark hair could be spectacular. Even now, Yuko was running through various hair styles and colours she could potentially do with this girl's shining dark hair. Her Mary Janes stopped swinging back and forth, thus saving the couch any more abuse, and Yuko reached up with her delicate hand to twirl a lock of pale hair from one of her pigtails, staring back at the girl quizzically with curious dark brown eyes. "Ara~! What a pretty girl! Yuko-chan is very lucky today for she has a visitor when she was just wishing for one," she said, her scarlet-painted lips suddenly breaking out into a brilliantly cute smile. "Yuko-chan was afraid of going up to her room because if she does, she may die for the room is terribly unlucky and she didn't want to go up there alone. But then if Yuko-chan takes you there, then what if she drags you into the bad luck, too? Yuko-chan's conscience wouldn't be able to bear it." At this, Yuko's lips became somewhat pouty, as if the world was suddenly being very unfair to an innocent young girl. For a few moments, her gaze wandered back to the window, her fingers fidgeting with each other nervously. Then, as if the thought of death and bad luck suddenly disappeared from her mind, Yuko smiled once more and leapt from her place on the couch, bounding over to the girl's side, taking a lock of her dark hair in one hand, stroking it, and tucking it behind her ear. "Such wonderful hair! It feels as good as it looks. Yuko-chan would love to play with it one day," she commented with a gasp, gazing intently at the stranger's face. "By the way, what's your name? Have you come here to move in, too?" |
