She returned it with a thin twitch of her lips that resembled a smile, “Good day,” she said simply. She was about to keep walking when she spotted a plump, wiggling worm twisting on the smooth stone of the path. Darlene paused and knelt to scoop the struggling thing out of its pain and drop it casually back onto the damp soil under the plants that grew on the edges of the garden. “Silly thing, really,” she said to no one in particular as she stood up, “to try to contain beauty that is wild.” She brushed her hands together, a habitual gesture more than an actually effective way to clean dirt from her fingers.
