Psychics and Ouija Boards

I didn't put this in the paganism section because it's a topic that concerns everyone. I've noticed that questions about psychics and ouija boards get asked very frequently at Y!A.

Why do people obsess over these topics? Is it because people want "easy answers", or is the lure of experimenting with things that seem "forbidden", especially for the ouija boards? What is everyone's views on these two topics?

Ironically, the topic of ouija boards is something that pagans and most monotheistic religions see eye to eye on. Although some pagans and witches would say that there are ways to use the board safely, they would caution most beginners against using it at all. I've never tried using one, and personally I don't understand why you'd want to take the risk. Nothing may happen as some people claim. But then I do believe in the existence of malicious entities. Why would anyone want to risk harming themselves or others?

Psychics - I've never met or heard of anyone who I would consider to really be a psychic. There might be such a thing as a "real" psychic, but I haven't yet seen enough evidence. A lot of so-called "psychics" get a lot of money from people who are hurting. Many just give people the answer that they think they want to hear.

A person who is honest about "readings" would acknowledge that a good one is a combination of meanings that have been set for hundreds of years and personal intuition.

I firmly believe that there can be monstrous, pun intended, consequences from the use of a Ouija board. I didn't know that pagans saw it that way, and I'm glad to know that's the case. I've seen a Ouija board once, and I got a bad (read petrified, nauseous, and the sense of intense danger) feeling, so I didn't touch it. I know there are malicious entities, and not just from the bible telling me so. I firmly believe I came into close contact with one once, and it was a literal miracle that I wasn't horribly wounded or killed. The blades on lawn mowers don't just fly off and hit people for no reason....

I think you're right in your assessment about Ouija boards and why people are drawn to them. I think the same is true of psychics. Many people are very drawn to anything that's easy, and especially to things that are forbidden. I believe that no human actually has the ability to tell the future, but I do think they can be told the future. The question is where they're getting their information from...

I've used a ouija board when I was young, maybe 15 or 16. It was with a group of friends and we didn't really believe in it. It was more the sort of thing young boys get up to, trying all the things your parents tell you not to.

Well, I have to admit it seemed to work, even though I've never been sure it wasn't one of my friends moving doing all the work instead of some unseen entity. We used it a few times over the course of a week or so, but nothing bad happened that I remember.

I do remember it was around Halloween because the only 'messages' I remember were from 'Beelzebub' and it said to hurry up as he was busy. That's what made me think it was one of my friends moving the planchette.

Soulless - yes I think in a lot of circumstances nothing is happening and people move the planchette to try to scare their friends. But I also believe people, like Rhonda, who have stories to share.

Rhonda - yes I've come across a lot of pagans who feel that way about Ouija. I'm sure there would be some who see Ouija as nonsense, or feel it works but is harmless, but on Y!A I have seen several Wiccans, pagans, witches, etc. almost get frustrated that people won't listen when they say "don't play around with things you don't understand". I've heard some people say it's because you could get in contact with a malicious spirit. Some also feel that even if you contact a "good spirit" if you're playing around and irritating it there could be consequences.

I would also be skeptical of people who claim to "read the future". I don't believe there's anything morally wrong with doing so, more that it increases the opportunity to deceive yourself or others.

Several traditional forms of divination actually focus on things like understanding the asker's perception of events, problems surrounding the question, and possible outcomes. To me it makes sense using a system that allows you to analyze yourself and others without resorting to contacting unseen entities.
