I don't have any set beliefs about gods or faith, so I was wondering how your beliefs affect the way you live, your attitudes to others and your view on the world in general. Do your beliefs colour all aspects of your life or do you separate your beliefs from your day to day life? I realise that a belief such as Christianity would be more readily accepted by others than Pagan beliefs would be, so do the opinions of others factor into how openly you follow your faith? Do the opinions of others, who possibly don't know much about your chosen faith or have mistaken ideas as to what it is, make it more difficult to practice your faith openly? |

Well I always openly follow the ethics of my faith, I just don't openly display my faith. Unless you count the times I wear Celtic jewelry. My ethical code is the same as the CR code of ethics, which summarized is: "Truth, Honor, Justice, Loyalty, Courage, Community, Hospitality, Strength, and Gentleness". Mercy goes hand in hand with justice, and generosity with hospitality. In addition I believe in respect and honour for family and ancestors and respect for the land we live on. Also respect for all living things. As for how it influences my daily life and outlooks - well I like to keep in mind every day the connectedness of all things and people and remember that as I respond to the world. I like to help and defend those who need it. I like to touch base with one family member about once a day. I know they miss me and besides the fact that I like being able to talk to them, I also see it as a way to honour and respect my family. I like to take walks and observe the changes in nature and my surroundings. I also like to think about and challenge my notions of the world and of my beliefs on an almost daily basis. It's how I keep learning and growing. I also do research several times a week. So yes my beliefs do colour all aspects of my life. By the way a bit off-topic, but I love your questions - you always ask such insightful ones. It makes me think of how to explain what I believe...which I'm going to have to start doing with family at some point in the near future. Edited by Willow, Apr 18 2008, 10:49 PM.

It sounds very fulfilling and you sound very much at peace with yourself and life. Thank you. I had hoped my questions were interesting. I guess because I don't have a faith I don't have much in the way of information to share so I like to learn how others face life and it's challenges. Even though I don't have a faith at present I like to find things in other's paths that I can still use in my life. For example, what you just wrote is something I can use. It can only make me a better person, even if I don't follow any religion. I also hope I can prompt people to examine their own beliefs and hopefully understand themselves a little better. I asked a question today at Y!A and Rhonda had a 'Eureka!' moment as she was answering it. I hope it gave her some insight into her beliefs and I got a kick out of seeing how excited she was. She got to be excited and happy and I got to be happy seeing (well, reading) it.

That 'Eureka!' moment has colored my whole day.... I believe that everything I do should honor God, so my faith does indeed color all aspects of my life. I don't always succeed in it, but I try to. And you'd be very surprised at how my particular brand of Christianity is looked down upon. It's all well and good to have that title, but you start mentioning actually following what Christ taught and you're in a boat load of trouble. I believe that God created man to have dominion over the earth. I take that to mean that it's our job to take care of it. It is here for our pleasure, but we must still take care of it. It saddens me to see Christians that completely ignore the parts of the bible that are inconvenient to them. I love God with my whole self, and I think that's what He deserves. To truly love Him, I must love the whole of His creation as He loves it. That includes people. 1Jn 4:17 In this is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment, that as He is, so also we are in this world. 1Jn 4:18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment. He who fears has not been perfected in love. Those are my "life verses" at the mo'. I want His love to be perfected in me so I can have boldness and be fearless. Of course, I pray for the wisdom that comes with that boldness. Zeal without wisdom, which crops up all too often, is chastised repeatedly in scripture. I mostly want His love to be perfected in me so I can see every single person as He sees them - precious and irreplaceable. I have to say, though, that my recent journey began with Psalm 51. Psa 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psa 51:11 Cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Psa 51:12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. God led me to those verses at a time when I was truly floundering. They are my prayer almost everyday. I firmly believe that in loving God first and whole-heartedly that I will see, act, and think differently about everything. I have, actually. God comes first. And everything else falls into place. |
