For my graphics battle with Seamus at http://gimpknowhow.com/topic/3283735/1/

I went for the white outline + dropshadow feel for this piece. This is a piece that was done for fun rather than for serious practice.

As per usual, done in Photoshop CS4 from scratch, no downloaded stocks, renders, brushes, or autoshapes used.

Did you draw the swirls or did you use the pen tool? I would also love to know how you made the nice halftone effects in the background since you said you didn't use any brushes. It looks awesome. I love the design and it would make a pretty cool wallpaper. The only thing is that the lines on a few of the shapes are a bit jagged.

Haha, amazing! Everything matches amazingly, looks awesome! One this that I don't like is that the clouds go from white to gray, and the outline is white... In my opinion, should go from light gray to a darker one. Looks awesome ;) 9/10.

Actually royal I didn't use any tuts for this.

The swirls were done with a pen tool and stroke, I find that for this style, it works best to keep off pressure simulation (keep in mind that I use photoshop)

The halftone effect was done with a photoshop filter. I make the shapes in black, on white, then I use Filters > Pixelate > Colour Halftone and set 4 channels to 45 degrees. Then I invert and set the layer to lighten.

Oh, whoops, my bad.

It actually isn't that hard once you know how to make the shapes, once you're done the shapes you just put a gradient overlay, a stroke, and a dropshadow. It's extremely easy to do in Photoshop, as for GIMP, I'm not sure how to do it.

I'll see if I can make a tut for this style though.

Half-tone is a style where, rather than smooth shading, you use a type of pointalism. Old comic books were all printed in colour halftone.

It is VERY easy in Gimp as well :P

Thanks for telling me how you achieved the half tone effect. I know how to do it in gimp but it doesn't come out quite as smooth as that.

Royal, here's the tutorial as you requested. If it's a bit too confusing, sorry, I can be pretty bad at explaining myself at times, and admittedly, the tutorial isn't in-depth:
