.::Republic of Indonesia::.
Overview Colonized by the Dutch in the eighteenth century and held as the Dutch West Indes, Indonesia declared independence after World War II, and sovereignty was attained in 1949. The nation is currently undergoing a process of democratization brought about by its first democratic elections in 1999; elections for both the Presidency and Legislature are slated to occur in 2014. Indonesia is comprised of thousands of islands, making it the world's largest archipelagic nation-state. It is also home to the largest national Muslim population in the world and is the world's third largest democratic state.
