"Five years ago today the pro-mutant terrorist widely known as Magneto was given control over the small African island nation of Genosha by the United Nations. It was supposed to end two conflicts at once, the violent crusade for mutant rights fought all over the globe by Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants as well as the civil war that has plagued Genosha ever since the late nineties when it was revealed that the country's wealth depended on so called 'mutates', artificially created mutants enslaved by the Genoshan government. This discovery - the spark that set the country on fire - was made by the X-Men, another mysterious mutant rights group seemingly more human friendly then Magneto's. They are also, somewhat ironically, seen as terrorists by both the current mutant government and the former human one.

The first question one should ask on a day like this is obvious: has the situation improved? Most would probably answer yes. For the first time since the civil war Genosha maintains a rather high standard of living and, while there still is some armed resistance, mutant/human violence has decreased significantly. I am standing in Hammer Bay and apart from rather obvious mutations and displays of superhuman powers, this city is not so different from the likes of London or Paris.

But there is another important question to ask: has Magneto truly abandoned his terrorist roots? One of the conditions for the UN's support of his claims was that he were to cease all violence against humans and give up his claims of mutant superiority. On the surface, all seems well. Over the last five years not a single terrorist attack or international incident has been tied to Genosha or it's President. Pro-mutant terrorism in general is heavily diminished because of the mutant immigration to the island. But to the few humans still living here, Magneto hardly seems to favor equality. Many jobs and especially positions in the government are closed to ordinary humans and many stores carry signs like 'Just for mutants' or 'No human shopping allowed'. Not to mention that a human, in order to gain the right to vote in the upcoming election, must have the written support of at least five mutants.

The election, yes. Exactly one year from now Magneto's six year term as President will end and he has promised open and democratic elections. Despite this, many are sceptic to his claims. Aside from the human citizens' hardships to vote, few believe that Magneto is willing to give up the power that easily and reminds the world that Magneto didn't earn his position in an election, he won it through terrorism.

But all of this seems of little concern today to the citizens of Genosha that as you can see are gathering on the square in order to celebrate their safe haven. The question is, is a Heaven for mutants a Hell for the rest of us?

This is Trish Tilby reporting live from Genosha, for NCBC. Good night
