Note: Included in this timeline is only the most important events and things of less significance may be added along the way.

1889 – The island of Genosha, a British colony, achieves their independence through a combination of guerrilla warfare (including several notable assassinations of British officials) and diplomacy. Although Britain doesn’t acknowledge their sovereignty until seven years later they pull back their military and colonists, allowing Genosha to form its own government.
1901 – Richard Moreau is sworn in as the Republic of Genosha’s first democratically elected leader although there is much controversy regarding the election and Moreau is accused of election fraud. Despite this he remains President and is generally accepted by the international community.
1919 – While serving his forth consecutive term as President, Richard Moreau is assassinated by an unknown perpetrator. This throws the already unstable country into a civil war that lasts almost three years before order is restored and Frido Engami assumes the presidency, supported by a majority of the warring factions.
1974 – One of Genosha’s foremost scientists, Dr. David Moreau, great-nephew of Richard Moreau, discovers the existence of “mutants”, people born with superhuman powers and manage to isolate the gene responsible for the phenomenon (later dubbed the “x-gene”). Further research reveals that while the gene is only dominant in a small minority of humanity, quite a lot have a latent version in their genome.
1980 – After years of research Dr. Moreau discovers a process to activate the latent x-gene, thereby turning an ordinary human into a super-powered “mutate”. He presents his findings to the government as is put in charge of a project that quickly turns into an entire branch of the government. Their assignment is to test the DNA of citizens for the existence of the x-gene and if it’s located, abduct the person and take them through the mutate process. A mutates previous identity is erased and they are only referred to by a serial number. At first the mutates are hard to control but the scientists soon come up with a drug that makes the mutates easily suggestible without diminishing their powers.
1983 – After being an urban legend for years the existence of mutants become a recognized fact by the world at large. This causes the Genoshan government to tighten the security around the mutates and restrict the freedom of its general population, enforced by a special police force called the Magistrates.
1985 – Thanks to the mutates, secretly working for the governments on all places in Genoshan society, Genosha’s economy and the living status of it’s (human) citizens quickly improves and it’s soon seen as a role model for other African countries.
1996 – A mutant terrorist, known only as Magneto, becomes famous overnight as he leads his Brotherhood of Mutants against the members of a lynch mob, suspected of brutally killing two young mutants a few days earlier. All members of the suspected mob are killed and while Magneto is generally condemned, some people are impressed by his actions and likens him to prominent freedom fighters and civil right advocates.
1997 – In response to Magneto, Professor Charles Xavier, himself a mutant, creates the X-Men, a paramilitary organisation of young mutants meant to combat threats to both mutant- and humankind.
1999 – Some of the X-Men infiltrate Genosha and discovers their secret mutate camps and factories. Although soon discovered and attacked by the Magistrates and the Genoshan military the X-Men manage to flee and publicize evidence of the mutate process. Genosha, at the time lead by President Cameron Hodge, first claim ignorance and then accuses the X-Men of illegal spying and acts of war. While a majority of the world’s governments are still fairly anti-mutant, the obvious violations of human rights causes the United Nations to step in and threaten the Genoshan government with various sanctions. Before the threats can be carried out the mere existence of them causes Hodge to loose his already fragile hold of the public and Genosha is once again thorn by civil war. This time several mutates, either freed or controlled, participate on several sides.
2000 – As the war in Genosha continues the UN sends troops to stabilize the country which succeeds to a degree but it’s obvious that a more long-term solution is needed.
2001-2003 – Magneto and his Brotherhood commits numerous acts of terrorism all over the world (including a failed attack on Genosha’s capital Hammer Bay, each time demanding a sovereign country for mutants. After long discussions the United Nations finally come up with a solution that if they’re lucky will hit two birds with one stone: during a press conference they, backed by all members of the Security Counsel, offer Magneto amnesty as well as political and military backing to take control over the still chaotic Genosha, in exchange for ceasing all aggressions against humanity.
2004 – Magneto accepts the offer at a personal visit to the UN Headquarters and soon after departs to Genosha. He faces overwhelming resistance but with help from the UN troops as well as many mutates and mutants Magneto manages to establish something at least resembling control and appoints himself President of the Mutants’ Republic of Genosha. His first official order as such is to expel the UN troops and replace them the Genoshan Guard, a military unit made up exclusively of mutants and mutates.
2005-present day – Despite continued resistance, especially from the internationally backed Magistrates, Magneto creates a working government and a at least somewhat prospering country. Normal humans are allowed to stay within Genosha but face severe restrictions and is clearly a lower class than the mutants. He also offers mutants from all over the world a safe haven in Genosha, in addition to amnesty for any crimes they may have committed. This strengthens both his army and his position with both mutants, who are glad to be safe, and humans, who are glad to be rid of them. Some concerns are raised about the risks of having a former terrorist and self-confessed mutant supremacist in control of what is quickly becoming the world’s most powerful army but so far this hasn’t been commented on by any governments.
