If you would like to get rid of unneeded borders, pay close attention to this Tut. ;)

First of all you need to open your render. I have a render of Aang because I enjoy the show "Avatar the Last Airbender."

Get out the Magic Wand tool by clicking on it.

Posted Image

Click on whatever extra space you have, and you will get a dotted border around it.

Posted Image

Go to "Select --> Invert" on the toolbar above.

Posted Image

Cut it out. (Edit --> Cut)

Posted Image

You will have the entire image cut out, just what you need.

Posted Image

I decided I would put mine in a signature, you can do whatever you want though. (File --> Open) Be sure you go to "Advanced Options" and click on "Transperancy" in the "Fill With" portion.

Posted Image

Go to your signature and press down "Ctrl+V" and get the image in your signature.

Posted Image

Now press down "Ctrl+L" to open up the layers menu. Ignore the little red box in the corner. Click on the lower layer.

Posted Image

Choose the paint bucket and pick your color to be white.

Posted Image

Fill in everything.

Posted Image

Don't worry about everything going white. Just drag that layer under your layer that has Aang in it.

Posted Image

I moved Aang over between steps. Don't worry about that. Now you will see something a little bit like this.

Posted Image

Now choose the pencil tool. Stay at the color white. Click where the size of the pencil is. Choose the smallest circle.

Posted Image

Zoom in to 800x, you can use the list below the image.

Posted Image

Now just click where the annoying border is. It will remove it.

Posted Image

Zoom out when you're done. Save it and you're done. You can substitute colors for different images. Use ink dropper to choose the extra colors.

Wait. I don't use GIMP. That's why it's so confusing.

LOL, same here. I might use GIMP some time though, it seems all right. I've actually tried it out once, but it was kind of confusing, especially since I was so used to Photoshop.

Anyway, nice tutorial, I'll come straight back here once I give GIMP another try.

Wait when using the pencil tool you have to manually get rid of each pixel of background? Wouldn't that take forever?
