While the dream of immortality might be as old as mankind, the jellyfish Turritopsis nutricula (image) seems to be living it:

The hydrozoan Turritopsis nutricula has evolved a remarkable variation on this theme, and in so doing appears to have achieved immortality. The solitary medusa of this species can revert to its polyp stage after becoming sexually mature (Bavestrello et al., 1992; Piraino et al., 1996). In the laboratory, 100% of these medusae regularly undergo this change. Thus, it is possible that organismic death does not occur in this species!

I figure the cycle would stop eventually.

I'm not sure I get it. Is it kinda like the phoenix concept?

The jellyfish has a life cycle similar to a frog's, that is, going through obvious, physically different stages. This jellyfish can repeat the cycle.

I was thinkin like how the phoenix gets reborn from the ashes kinda thing. So it like becomes an adult, goes back to a fetus, to a child, then back to an adult basically (In laments terms)?

If people did that, I don't think you could really call that immortality.

Its the same "being", jellyfish don't have brains so there's no consciousness to carry over though. I suppose it might be closer to reincarnation than immortality.

I would agree with you there. If you loose your consciousness then your not immortal.

There could be a way to take the jelly fish gene and put it into humans...... but i would try maybe a dog first and see that if it does come back if it knows you and responds to the same name in the same way... so if we could people wont die... which might suck in a war or something cause if you get show you will just come out of the dead body and keep fighting.... so pretty much your DNA would turn to a necromancer......

I agree with Gosox in a way. It does remind me of the phoenix concept, i kind of would consider it immortal though. I also agree with you mossad. The reincarnation makes more sense. This is cool never heard of anything like it. Anyone know where they live?
