I don't know for sure but based on what I've learned from Anime and Social Studies it takes place around, if not in the Meji era. I think it's a bit before though. So basically these guys launch into Japan, I'm assuming now their from one of the "powerhouse" imperial European nations to go and take Japan, or something along those lines. As that army fights with guns and stuff, while the Japanese still have the swords and stuff. So in one of the battles, the main character gets like taken captive. There's some down time afterwards so I guess the army pulled back for one reason or another. So he's stuck in Japan. They treat him good though, he ends up staying at the home of some lady who's husband he killed and stuff. So he's just kinda hanging out and stuff for a while. And then he kinda gets more and more accepted by the Japanese and he starts to kinda be more open to their ideals and stuff, i guess you could say. So he starts to learn about the Japanese people and the way of the samurai and stuff. Theres a lot more action involved in it than that, but I can't really describe all that. So yeah I think that should about cover it.
