Yeah, it's a year late, but who cares?

Batman: Arkham Asylum

ESRB Rating: T for Teen: Alcohol and Tobacco Reference, Blood, Mild Language, Suggestive Themes, Violence
Description: This is a Batman game derived straight from the comics, no movie or book involved. Players take control of Batman as he tries to thwart Joker’s plans and restore control over Arkham Asylum, a special jailhouse island for the mentally insane. Joker has escaped custody, and now controls everything on the island. Batman, has other plans for him.

What Skwid Thinks:
Nowadays we see a lot of small budget titles like Spiderman hitting store shelves without much work done just as a source of revenue. Many games nowadays aren’t masterpieces meant for the gamer, but discs inside plastic cases that have no other purpose than to fill the publisher’s wallet. Batman: Arkham Asylum…is one of the best adventure/comic book/action games I have played to date.
The tale it tells is so complex with so many twists and turns, it’s a roller coaster that I’m sure only Batman can ride. The gameplay is fast and responsive, although I personally felt myself sometimes lost in the game, as the rooms get confusing to navigate back and forth, and then it’s no fun, because what I’m looking for is more time to beat the sh*t out of bad guys. You just mash the strike button repeatedly and move the direction button towards enemies, keeping your focus off of button pushing and more in looking at the insanely (haha) awesome moves Batman has to offer. I love the fact that in some points in time, you’ll get a slo-mo close up of a finishing move, and the visuals are so pretty my eyes have trouble believing the animation is fake.
The story is so deep and also very grim, the mood slowly moves from action to sadness and depression as you see hungrily crazy victims of Joker’s wandering around, completely out of their minds, and all of a sudden Joker’s voice will cut in throwing in a hilarious yet at the same time very sad but also very cruel statement that just makes it feel all the more real. The screen writing, the dialogue, the voice acting, and the graphics all combine to make this feel like a tragedy movie which you’re desperately trying to make a happy ending to. Even Batman’s character will wear out physically, showing grime, an unshaven beard, tears on the Batsuit, and an unhappy expression as the story wears on. Joker, however, appears relatively jolly throughout the story, giving comic relief although he himself is also causing all the depression.
The gameplay does not wear out until you finish the story, but it will stay longer for those certain completionists who will try to find all of the Riddler trophies and challenges spread out on the map of Arkham Island. I just wish there was a horde mode in which you could just destroy hundreds of enemies, wave after wave, and lock down those special combos and brutal knockouts. Stealth works well, but realism is kind of messed up, as the enemies don’t really hear or see your grapple hook pounding into the gargoyle which causes debris to fall down…but hey, it’s Batman: it doesn’t have to be real.

Closing Comments:
This is a great game: all of it’s offers work great and perfectly. What it tries to do, it succeeds in, but there could be an option for helping out the lost gamers who can’t find their way around the vents, doors, and cliffs of Arkham Island. I loved it for the story, but then after the interesting challenges (some of them are actually very fun)…it becomes a quiet game in your shelf that you may or may not touch for a while. All in all, for an awesome time feeling like a super rich, but totally awesome badass who can fight like Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee combined, get Arkham Asylum.

(And no, I haven’t played Split Second for a while because I was playing this game, but expect a review on it soon!)—I love how I didn’t say how soon.
