New Super Mario Bros. Wii

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
ESRB Rating: E for Everyone
Description: Play as Mario, Luigi, and others in another remake of the classic franchise, Super Mario Bros.
What Skwid Thinks:
This isn’t another version of what you found (or didn’t, as it was selling out) on the shelf over 4 years ago, nor is it anything new. It is, very simply, a big budget title that Nintendo slacked off (just a little bit) on. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great game when you put it out on its own, ignoring the previous titles, but there is quite simply nothing unusual brought to Mario in this iteration of the series aside from motion controls and 4 player co-op. Sure, the graphics are better than the DS’s as it’s on the Wii, but they are nothing great compared to other major Wii games.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii starts off with a familiar control scheme, just like the DS version, with you holding the Wii remote sideways and the 1 and 2 buttons as the X and Y on the DS. Then things get complicated for around an hour. Frequently you are asked to do motion controls like shaking the Wii remote to pick up items, and that’s only for an hour, but then it gets complicated again when you play with a friend. The game throws in more enemies, more co-op needed abilities, like picking up and throwing your partner to a location only one of you can reach, etc., etc., which in turn forces you to pick a partner who knows about the game as much as you. Both have to be equal players in order to succeed, which makes wide age gaps in between siblings a problem, as Mario was designed for everyone, and when people see Mario, they generally know it’s a game anyone can play and beat. For this game, it’s only for one player at a time.
The fun and creativity are the same as usual, the puzzles are different this time around, but one thing I noticed, is that if you lose a powerup (like the new Ice Mario) at the beginning of a level, there is positively no way that you can proceed forward on certain levels. You have to die to get the power again, and yes, the DS owners will be shouting, “But what about that backup power that is stored safely for whenever you need it? On the DS it’s on the bottom screen. What about the Wii?” There is no backup powerup. Yeah, you can say it bumps up the challenge level, but it also makes it frustrating at some points in time. Those of you who are skilled or haven’t played the DS one or similar versions won’t complain, but for me, it’s a pain in the ass to have to die in order to get a power back. The game really has some levels where you just want to skip the thing and move on, but that entire world will remain incomplete if you don’t beat it, so there is no easy way out, like in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
The game also has this new feature which is basically a video library with a collection of replays of perfect gameplay. This is also stupid, because if they are willing to show how good the developers are by calling it a “hint video”, they should keep a save replay and upload replay feature for the user as well so that if you get a sweet time on a level, you can show everyone how good you did compared to Nintendo. But no, you don’t have the option.

Closing Comments:
All in all, this game isn’t what Nintendo usually does. This, I think was a title that Nintendo wanted to play it safe on. There is nothing amazing about it, and it’s not bad. After all, when you get down to the core gameplay, it’s Mario, and that’s always been fun. It hasn’t changed today, but we’re so used to Nintendo bringing something new to the party that I’m disappointed this time around because of it’s lack of improvement in some way. It’s complete ignorance of online support, and poor 4 player co-op make it not a failed attempt, but not an effort at all. It’s a good game; they need to make it better.

Are clocks Microwavable?

Aww now the logo sucks again.. I spent time on that too..

Ah whatever, I'll just change the text like I did with the signature I'm using now. AND REUSE IT!

Me talking about the game: Looks like your sister stinks! :D Mario co-op was never done before ('cept in galaxy but...) and It's pretty cool to work together.. even if it increases your chances of dying by 120%.. and needing WIIMOTES to have more players. :meh:
They put enough into it to make it a solid mario game.

Me talking about your review: It's a good game review, You keep complaining though. ... Stop that.
