Get this. The world cup season is coming up, one of the only times of the year which unites the English people under one common interest. It only comes once every 4 years. It's the only real time the English whip out their England shirts and flags, and be patriotic for a while.

Now, however, because of people coming in from other countries, wearing England shirts and displaying England flags has been made illegal. Why? Because it might offend people from other countries.

This begs the question; if our patriotism offends them, if something about our country offends them, why are they even here? Is it our docile tolerance as a nation to every culture and belief system? Perhaps it's our benefits and council houses that immigrants seem to get prominence over British residents for? or maybe, just maybe, it's the fact that we let them come into our country, sponge off of our economy, and criticize our national belief systems and morals without so much as a complaint?

It takes a lot for me to get truly riled by anything, and I pride myself on my calm temperament and great tolerance to pretty much everyone. But this is just going too far.

That just messed up.

The only logical way is to vote them out.

Next they will get your sovereignty.

I bet the EU got something to do with it.

@Thinvader is other Nations flags are banned too.

I don't think other country's flags are banned. People don't wave them anyway. If I see one after this rule, however, I'll burn it.

I don't know. The Tories have barely been in a fortnight, and already they're messing everything up. I hate them.

IT sucks that your own nation flag was banned.

Don't think. Your government said that your flag is banned because it might start a riot.

I can't have a huge amount of empathy for the immigrant stuff. America IS immigrants, so we don't have the problem if immigrants getting more power, because anyone who comes here is American (excepting illegal immigrants--that IS a problem, but it's not as if they have any sort of felt impact in our governmental systems. I don't see it, and I live in a border state). I think it's stupid to look down on immigrants, but the national situation and history that I'm looking from is a lot different than yours, and I think I can understand where it might frustrate you.

That is INCREDIBLY stupid that you can't be patriotic. It'd be like...if Americans couldn't show patriotism during The 4th of July. OK, perhaps not that bad (it is our independence day after all), but it's still horrible. It's stupid to ban something like this. If someone is coming form another country, wouldn't they WANT to see a nation of people who are proud of their country...? If you were coming to experience British life, wouldn't you WANT to see this? Even if you were only coming to work, there's something to be said for working where people can feel proud about where they live--that can help a foreigner understand the country more.

DT, I VERY much doubt the EU has anything to do with this >.>

That's like saying your not allowed to wear a scout uniform to a scout campout because it might offend non scouts that are invited to the camp.

You should come to America for a week. Then you'll understand what we have to go through.

Take our President for example...

@Vlad: When I started reading that post, I thought you were supporting the rule. Glad to see you've got common sense, though ;)

Also, you're right. I love seeing England so patriotic for a while, because it never is at any other time. Not even during the General Election. Or St. Georges Day, or anything like that. I don't mind legal immigrants, I really don't. But when they start doing this... It jut irritates me so much...

@TMoT & Martho: My sentiments exactly.

@WMT: Wanna swap? Our Prime Ministers, David Cameron and Nick Clegg (coalition government... Too much to explain, and it'll just lead to another anti-conservative rant), for your President? I'd happily make that exchange.

I don't know much about other countries and their leaders, but I'll just put it this way, he doesn't belong here (america).

Ya'know, WMT, you have a knack for bringing up Obama when there is no need to bring him up at all. I'd congratulate you, but it doesn't deserve congratulation whatsoever. Take it to another topic or leave it the heck alone for once T_T

Eh, what exactly is St. George's Day? I'm not familiar with most British holidays, though I do know a lot about Guy Fawkes Day.

I've always found it interesting that the British get so patriotic over the World Cup...it's never made sense to me. Well, I guess everyone needs some sort of patriotic gathering, and that's as good as any.

St. Georges Day? You know what? I don't have a clue :P And Guy Fawkes Day is more commonly referred to as Bonfire Night. That one is massively celebrated, although not a reason to be patriotic.

The World Cup is such a big deal here because football (or [american-accent]'Soccer'[/american-accent]) is the national game. Some people devote their lives to it here. Personally, I think it's pretty pathetic, getting so worked up about a bunch of overpaid pansies crying about a scratched knee to cheat their way to victory, and then starting riots about it... I like it because Walkers always brings out 'world cup flavour' crisps, and they're always very nice :P

Anyway, from what I've heard, this stupid law has been taken down. Everyone is displaying flags now. Good on them.

It's a great comparison of a leader in one country that many do and don't like with a leader in another country that people do and don't like.
