Even in the H2G2 universe it doesn't have any actual meaning. The reasoning is that you can never know both the question to life, the universe, and everything, AND the answer to that question within the same universe. It may have some significance somewhere, but then again, so do all numbers beneath 100. It's not a part of some large over-arching law or anything like e is.
