Witch one do you think is more likely? I personally prefer catastrophism. So lets get debating! |

How things like the grand canyon formed. Catastrophism is were it happened all in catastrophies such as floods and volcanoes. Uniformitarianism is were it all happened super slowly over billions and billions of years. There is, more evidence for catast and I think it is more likely. |

I see... To a degree, both. The winds and the waters slowly etch shapes into land, while at the same time, things crash and burn to speed the process along. Without both, Things wouldn't be the same. |

I think those are the wrong words, gradualism and anti-gradualism are the correct terms aren't they? Evolution shows that we evolved in big steps, but over billions and billions of years. |

this is more of a subtle creationist argument if anything, and you actually dont have those definitions correct martho. |

The Grand Canyon was created over millions of years by gradual erosion by water. The idea that it was formed quickly by a catastrophe is ridiculous and countered by an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence. |

I've heard creationist arguments saying the Grand Canyon was caused by a global flood... go figure... =\ |

lol if it was it seems to me like the ENTIRE landscape would be knocked away not just that spot. XD hell they are wrong to start with, so maybe it makes sense in wrong longic. |

There is a canyon somewhere that was formed by possibly the largest cascade of water ever on Earth.. I can't remember which one though... But the Grand Canyon was most likely created over millions of years, maybe with the aid of catastrophes. |

I'd say both. The grand canyon was made over a long period of time, but things like craters from meteorites are definitely made quickly. |

The Grand Canyon was carved by a glacier/river... like every other canyon or valley. |

Wasn't it made by erosion? |

erosion: the process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, waves, etc. |

Okay, well then let me rephrase that: Wasn't the Grand Canyon formed by being worn away by the Colorado River? |

The Grand Canyon largely came from the erosion from the Colorado River, though wind erosion probably played a more and more major role as the river slowly carved out a path. That's how I understand it. I'm not exactly an expert on geology, though. Edited by Vlad, May 16 2010, 12:59 AM.

I kinda failed the debate with my descriptions. In Uni the earth is billions of years old and most structures happened over large amounts of time. In Cat the earth is just thousands of years old and most structures happened relatively quickly from things like floods and volcanoes. |
