I think this should provide an interesting debate... When a topic starts to go off topic, at what point do you draw the line? Is it as people start to branch off into loosely related sub-debates, just like in a real-life conversation, or is it when it reaches a point where it isn't clear what the topic is about anymore? Personally, I think it's good when a topic starts to loosely branch off, provided that the people who are talking can find their way back to the discussion at hand, before it gets out of control. For example, a topic about someone's new car slowly turns into a general conversation about cars, but another poster might bring the subject back on topic by asking a question about the original poster's car. I think this demonstrates how well the members get on with each other, because they can have a civilized conversation, just as if they were proper friends. What are your views? If this discussion goes well, it could very well improve our moderating team. |

I draw the line when the recent posts of the topic show little or no relation to the topic subject. |

When the current discussion in the topic isn't related to the topic's subject. For example, computers. The OP talks about a new computer, and the topic changes slowly to what computers everyone is using. That needs it's own topic. |

@Nijg: I agree. @DM: *ignores* @WMT: That's the same as my example. Thus, I have to disagree there. Technically, a discussion about computers does relate in that example. It's loose, but it relates. |

I think that topics do evolve, and they wont always stay on track. Unless it become horribly off topic(having nothing to do with the topic at all), then it should be allowed. |
