Anybody heard of or playing Ingress?

Its an AR game for your phone that makes use of the GPS. You join one of two factions and find portals that you "hack" to get items and capture for your team. Other people can help deploy shields and other items plus keep the portal charged because their power decays over time.

Portals are lanarks, churches, statues, murals and other interesting places. You can suggest new places for portals and they have to be approved.

At the very core, the game is geocaching that is kept interesting; not becoming a bore over time going to the same spots. It also marks interesting public places you have overlooked in your own area as well as having you explore other local places.

I started to play it out of curiosity and was delighted in my interest to go for walks even after being on my feet all day. I found a nice mural and a park I overlooked next to my sons football practice field. Some places are hotly contested and portal linking blocks the other team from linking portals through your area.

There are some concerns about privacy so I haven't fully dived into the G+ groups because the app broadcasts your location to your faction. There is a current world wide event right now in major cities across the world. Looks like fun to meet up with other players. Local groups can also organize events on the 1st Saturday of each month.

Scott Kurtz talked about this game a lot. They would raid cities whenever there were conventions. It sounded neat, but I didn't like the fact that you had to have location services on.

I used to always keep location off but recently turned it on because of some great app usage for work I get out of it. I'm still conflicted about it.

I accidently got myself into a whole workout routine when we signed the family up for the YMCA aquatic center. That put a damper on me wanting to walk about even more. I'll still tinker around with the game mostly to check out what neat little places are about.
