So the imminent release of RB4 was the catalyst and Xbox One going full retro compatible was the tipping point in favour of Xbox. We picked up a refub model with the Kinect and it's...well, it's awesome.

The kids are FINALLY going to sleep around the same time and it gives Jenn and me an hour or so to play a game in the evening. Plus, we picked up Zoo Tycoon, which we can play with the kids. So we're finally getting a bit of gaming in.

I'm tempted to get a PS4 so I can play Destiny with one of the guys I work with. He's been pushing me that he needs more players for raids and such. I suck at FPS though with a controller, I'm used to WoW with the keyboard/mouse combo. I have some money coming in for a website I designed though, which would conveniently be almost exactly what a PS4 would cost.

What was all the negativity with Destiny? I remember seeing complaints. Was it that it had to be played online? There were a couple popular games that had some heavy backlash at the time.

I guess that's not TOO bad since Sony still lets you do online for free. But if that's the case there's no way I'd buy it for the xbox.

Sony used to do online for free, but on PS4 it's a pay-for service.

Yeah, Sony is pay for online now. I'm not sure its quite worth it yet since I suck at FPS. I think Destiny can be played solo though.

Well there goes the only mark in the Pro's column for buying me a Sony. I've honestly never been enthused with the available games. Not saying they're bad, just not my style.

They're still selling new games for the 360 so I'm sticking with it.

I wish I still had my nice slimline instead of the 1st Gen PoS I bought from my son because he needed the money. You know it's bad when you can't hear your window a/c over the noise from your game console.

I bought a 360 about a year ago and have a catalog of games I need to make it through before I bother with getting something new. Since we just moved I haven't had much space or time to play, but that should be changing. I still have Skyrim and the Mass Effect trilogy to struggle through.

I enjoyed the ME trilogy. Be sure to play them in order as your decisions carry through to the next game. I really liked the ME 3 game mechanics as they combined what I liked best of the two previous games although as I'm sure you've heard, the boss fights and ending sequences were a bit disappointing.

I've played Skyrim on pc and 360 although not to the end on either. It's fun and extremely long. I liked some of the mods for the pc that improved graphics, added new companions, etc...

It's happened. I've completely worn out the rubber grip on the left thumbstick of my 360 controller. While researching on the webs I've come across some products with potential.

1. Microsoft replacement thumbsticks
2. KontrolFreek thumbstick extenders
3. Thumbstick grip covers

I was wondering if anyone here has used any of these products. The reviews look pretty good, the negatives regarding the KontrolFreek and Grip-iT cover seem most likely caused by having already worn out grips which is why I will definitely be getting the new sticks. Also, if you know of any replacement sticks like #1 but with extended length like you get from using #2 that would be awesome to know about.

I didn't even know you could repair a controller. I have a chipped stick on mine but I just force the kids to use that one. No one is allowed to touch the one I use except Elmira because she doesn't listen to my decrees anyhow.

You can pretty much build your own controller from scratch except for the control board itself. Everything else including the shell is replaceable. By chipped do you mean the plastic is damaged or the rubber grip is tearing off? I've watched videos on replacing parts on the 360 controller and it's dead easy. The only hitch is since you have wireless controllers you'd need the torx security wrench but lots of parts come with it and you can even buy the tool itself in screwdriver form. Definitely cheaper than $40+ to replace the controller.

Cheaper? That depends on how long it takes you to fix the controller...

Okay, I wanted to use all three purchases a few days before voicing an opinion.

1. Replacement thumbsticks: From what I've been seeing in reviews, it seems the black replacements are more durable than the original grey ones my controller came with. It took me longer to find a screwdriver that fit than it did to actually install them. It was about 5 minutes from start of disassembly to putting the last screw back in, and I was watching Hotshots on cable so it didn't even have my full focus. I really didn't notice any difference from the originals which is a good sign. One of the related items that Amazon lists is the pots themselves. I didn't replace those, but I expect my controller would have tightened up nicely as these now have hundreds of hours of use on 'em.

2. KontrolFreek: Before replacing the sticks I tried using these on my worn out ones. As I expected, they didn't hold on at all well. After replacing the sticks I put the extenders on again. They snapped on really tight and so far I've not had any problems with them coming off. I tried them on Defiance, DCU, and Arkham Asylum because they each have completely different play styles. Keeping in mind that none of the games have any kind of accuracy tracking, everything I say is subjective and not backed up by hard data. In Defiance I noticed a marked improvement within minutes. I seem to have a significantly higher rate of critical kills from head shots with my pistol than before. In DCU there wasn't really any noticeable difference because it's got built in target assistance which you can't turn off. You point and it hits. I also didn't seem to notice any difference in Arkham Asylum. This game doesn't really have any snap shot gun play in it. It's almost all melee so the finer control doesn't really have any impact. Again, these are completely subjective comments based on personal experience with no verifiable data. I need to mention that the extra height made my thumbs tire pretty quickly on the first day using them but as I get used to the new positioning of my thumbs that extra fatigue seems to be lessening. Other users have mentioned only using an extension on one stick because you don't need the fine control for moving around. This is true, but I used 'em on both because my brain sticks on stuff like that and I know it would be terribly distracting for me.

3. GripiT thumb covers: I first tried them on the old sticks, same expected results as with the extenders. Didn't stay on worth crap. However, I placed them on my Rock Candy controller which I never use because the sharp, hard edges of the stick pads were painful to use for very long and had poor gripping ability. After placing the covers on them it's a much nicer controller and they are holding on quite well. I placed the second pair on the KontrolFreeks which wasn't as easy because the KF pads are actually a bit larger than the stick pads. But I was able to finagle them on. They're more comfortable for longer playing times than the stock sticks and even tho the KF pads are larger I've still not had any problem yet of them falling off.

My overall feeling is satisfaction with the entire purchase. I didn't absolutely have to get the KF's which was the most expensive item, but I don't regret getting them and I'm kind of a tight-wad with a pretty high instance of buyers remorse on such purchases even when they do work as advertised which they seem to do.

My brother in law got our kids a Wii U last Christmas and it's a pretty fun system. The fact that all our old controllers and games were 100% compatible was a huge plus. The only downside seems to be the button layout on the main controller. I just can't get myself accustomed to the different labeling of the buttons. I only have one first person game (Watch Dogs) on it that requires all the buttons. I continually hit the wrong buttons when prompted on the screen. I'm too embedded with the xbox buttons.

This Christmas we're getting an Xbox One because Elmira's brother likes to spoil our kids. I bought Lego Dimensions at a deep discount during sales and the 1TB model we're getting includes the whole remastered Gears of War series, a downloadable indie game and 40 Rare games (Perfect Dark Zero, Banjo Kazooie and 38 games I never heard of). Has anyone else already gotten the system and/or can recommend some cool games for XBONE? I'm fond of buying used games so anything with a good rating I'll take a look at.

We're keeping the 360 until its catalog gets converted to play on XBONE. I have way too many unfinished games and Skyrim has too much replay value not to keep playing it forever.

I've got XBONE. Get Ori and the Blind Forest. Best platformer I've played in decades.

I've got RB4, but haven't had a chance to play it yet. And I've heard really bad things about Halo 4's single-player story - basically, the overall positive rating for the game was entirely for the multiplayer content.

If you haven't played it already on 360, get Castle Crashers.

Ori is the indie game it comes with! That's good news. I saw new rock band sets at the store but our old stuff works perfectly still.

Elmira got Dark Souls 2 on Steam. Seems to be almost Nintendo-Hard murder guantlet. Lots of dying and starting over from sparse save points. That may just be first impressions.

I've also heard that even though Halo 4's single player campaign was touted as being the first done with co-op in mind, that it doesn't support split-screen co-op.

Actually, I just confirmed, it allows no single-console split screen at all; campaign or multiplayer. So to play multiplayer with your friends, they can't be at your house.

That's my biggest gripe about new games. The most fun I've ever had on every system was playing in the same room with friends. Online play is good but not the same.

We had a collection of bad and good games that were near perfect as split screen fun. Half the fun in GoldenEye was looking at each other's screen to figure out the hiding spot and create mexican standoffs.

And don't forget Brute Force. You were awesome at using Brutus' ability to see targets in the fog on my screen to snipe them on yours!

Brute Force was a crappy game unless it was played co-op. Then it was awesome. We rocked at some major teamwork tricks. I miss that.

Conflict Desert Storm on the original Xbox was some of the sweetest co op fun. A subpar game that got a sequel because flaws are overlooked if you're having too much fun.

Im a third of the way through Ori and the Blind Forest. Finally hit a somewhat tough puzzle but it seems to lean heavily towards a beautifully rendered Metroid. I expected puzzles but a very pleasant surprise that I get a new 'metroid'. Escaping the Ginsu tree was a fun pain in the ass acrobatic feat. I'm hoping there isn't more jumping/slingshot abilities. I won't be able to handle any more complication to leaping through the air.
It may sound like I'm complaining but I think it's a great game.
