Alright, I've got a PS2, a Wii and an Xbox 360. Those are the systems that host my current back log of games, which I will be playing through shortly. Eventually, Jenn and I will get a PS4 and an Xbox One. The Xbox can wait until Halo 5 comes out next fall.

But, in the meantime, I'm trying to decide whether to get PS4 or PS3. My understanding is that the PS4 is not backwards compatible with PS3 games, and I would really like to play through the Uncharted Series. I think the first three titles were all released for PS3, and Uncharted 4 will be PS4, but isn't due out until 2015. Are there any other PS3 games that anyone would suggest are 'must-haves?" I don't care for the Assassin's Creed titles.

Other pros: a new PS3 is about $300 cheaper than one of the PS4 bundles. A PS3 is also a blu-ray player?

Cons: Are there any games out on (exclusively) PS4 that would be must-have titles?

Also, does anyone know if either next-gen system is going to release a Rock Band equivalent?

There were only a handful of PS3 exclusives that ever caught my interest. Probably the best series were Uncharted as you mentioned and the God of War series. Those are the only ones that made me wish I had a PS3.

Infamous got a good reception but I didn't like the story setup and game play. Granted, that was my opinion after messing around with it for 10 minutes at a store kiosk. I also didn't have much desire to play it after reading positive reviews. You may take to it much more than me.

Killzone was another one that was fawned over. It's a shooter that got good press and a sequel. Don't hear about it as much as even Gears of War so I assume CoD, Battlefield, Halo and others will fill the FPS need much better.

Metal Gear Solid got at least one release on PS3. Got great press leading up to its release. That may be a good one to look into. I don't know much about it.

For the PS4, I've been very much not paying attention to console games. I don't *think* there is any must have games for either system just yet. I think you're somewhat in the same camp that I'm in... sequels retreading the same ground aren't must-haves IMO. I don't believe anything different and fresh is out. Developers seem to be looking for big budget blockbusters so they're following the safe path towards profit just like movie producers.

For the WiiU, it's again Nintendo relying on their stock list of characters to fill out sales. Third parties can't do anything exciting with the Wii once again.

The PS3 does have a blu-ray player. That was supposed to doom the 360 but didn't. Neither PS4 or XBOne are backward compatible but the Wii U is.

I'm kinda with you on Assassin's Creed. I loved playing the first one. After getting through it, I never had a desire to get any of the sequels. I think it satisfied my Prince of Persia acrobatic withdrawal. Lots of fun but the story was as frustrating as it was enjoyable.

Are the God of War games the Shadow of the Colossus, etc?

Shadows of Colossus is a different game but also considered great. It was a PS2 game but I believe it was released for the PS3 in a collectors series. God of War is a 5 game series. I believe most are great games. You'd have to look up the individual ratings. All 5 have been released together in a single collection to buy.

We picked up Borderlands & Borderlands 2 and Portal 2 today on the Steam sale. Some good co-op fun for Jenn and me.

And I'm finally getting to play Twilight Princess! Borrowed my mom's Wii. I also picked up Epic Mickey and the Fire Emblem game, so I've got a bit of time to hunt down a good price on a PS3 and the games. But God of War sounds pretty cool, and I'm stoked about the Uncharted series.

Come on, God of War is one of the biggest recent game serieses (?), you can't not have heard of it! I only played the first and it was a blast. You pretty much just mash buttons to kill things and do some quick-time events once in a while (AFAIK God of War is the biggest responsible for QTEs being such a widespread plague) but it's better than it sounds - it's very cathartic. And Shadow of the Colossus is IMO simply the best game of the 3D era (i.e. after the SNES days, otherwise it'd have to compete with Super Mario World), but too bad it stayed at a single game that's quite outdated by now.

I played Epic Mickey for about an hour or so, haven't picked it up since, but mostly just for lack of time. I guess I've been colored by some negative reviews though, there are several people that seemed to be disappointed in the game. I think it's alright, it's just that the artwork and such before it was actually released made it look like THE MOST AWESOMEST EPIC THING EVAR. I guess the name doesn't help matters in that department. I guess if it was called just "hey, have a Mickey game here" it would be great. At least near the beginning, it doesn't look quite as grim and dystopian as the pre-released artwork made it seem like either.

I liked Twilight Princess - it's not quite the creative explosion that was Ocarina of Time, but it's a pretty decent entry in the series. Since I'm a bit slow with these games though, I didn't get to finish it before I acquired Skyward Sword, and now I'm distracted with the new game. Which I haven't played in a long time either. Man, I gotta start making more time for videogames :P

With Epic Mickey, I'm hoping for a Mario Sunshine, but I'm braced for another Kingdom Hearts.

I've never played Super Mario Sunshine - just heard it's probably the weakest and most inconsequential game in the main Mario series. I've played Kingdom Hearts for even less time than Epic Mickey, and thought that, while the premise is awesome (all Disney worlds put together, PLUS Final Fantasy??) the actual result looked kinda stupid. So I guess you're safe.

Kingdom Hearts is a non-stop button mashing grind to collect blocks that don't actually do anything useful in the game, set against small, uninteresting back drops.

Mario Sunshine was a lot of fun. The robot rocket pack is Navi-annoying at first, but it never talks after the first or second mission.

The rocket pack adds an interesting dynamic, and some of the puzzles are quite challenging. Though if you're not a completionist, the really, really hard puzzles can be ignored. I'd really place it in the Luigi's Mansion style of game-play, though. It's not a traditional Mario brothers, even though you're collecting the usual stars and coins a la Mario 64.

But mostly, I find the game really soothing. The visuals are colorful, the music is laid-back, and its not punishingly difficult.

Thinking about it now, I think it would be a challenge on a rom. The controls are really optimized for a Game Cube controller.

Sounds interesting. I don't have a GC, but it seems GC games can be played in the Wii if one can acquire a GC controller. Maybe I'll look into that someday...

GC games work on the Wii? Is that with an after-market fix of some sort? The Wii re-release of Golden Eye included the "N64 controller" nunchuk attachment in gold, so I'm kind of keen on hearing this.

Sadly, the N64 controller attachment doesn't work with Zelda, so I'm still flailing stupidly for combat, but it'll work with Fire Emblem when I get that far.

I've never tried it, but what I heard is that the Wii runs GC games straight out of the factory, no mods or whatever needed. You just need an original GC controller to play them (in fact, the Wii has 4 GC controller inputs). The "disk load" screen (when you select the disk channel) shows both a regular-sized disk and a small, GC-sized one, which adds credence to this idea. BTW, the NDS (at least the first generation) also has a cartridge slot for... whatever was Nintendo's handheld before it. GBA? Not sure. Anyway.

N64 games are trickier though. Mind you, my knowledge is strictly based on what I heard from a guy in the game pirating business in the early days of the Wii, when I bought it and had it modded for pirate games. Thing is, while the Wii is made to handle NES, SNES and Genesis games bought via the Wii Store, and it runs GC games as a standard feature, the N64 is kind of "orphaned" for Wii users since there's no way to legally play N64 games on the Wii, and pirate-style emulation is really hard. At least at the time, the main method involved taking the Ocarina of Time re-release for the GC, which has some sort of N64 infrastructure built within it, and editing the game to replace all the game parts with some other N64 game (such as Super Mario 64). Which was tough to do and really buggy since you had to really hack into the code to do that. I never got around to buying it, but imagined myself playing it someday, someone seeing that and saying "Wow, you're playing Mario 64 on the Wii?" and I'd reply "No, it's Ocarina of Time for the Gamecube" and I'd be technically telling the truth :P

I can only pipe in to confirm GC games do play on the Wii. The 360 was the only one in that console generation to not go backward compatible out of the box.

I did not realize any of this, and it makes me excited! I'm going to check this week if the GC controllers will work with the new Wii Golden Eye release. As I mentioned, the game comes with a GC controller that attaches to the Wiimote, so it's wireless, which is cool. But it's also a little dumb to have a Wii hanging off your controller while you play. If the GC controllers will function...well, that's amazeballs awesome and I foresee Golden Eye parties in the near future.

I remember Nintendo announcing that they ceased online Wii support. Not having downloaded anything, I have no idea how it affects downloads or other such content.

That sucks. I haven't downloaded stuff in a while, but I liked looking at the demo games once in a while. I even watched the Nintendo Channel some. What can I say, it got pretty lonely at home back when I was still married :P

All I can tell you is that if you like the Defiance game you can now DL it on the 360 but only if you have a Gold Live account.

Found out my brother-in-law is getting my kids a Wii U for Christmas and told me it will play all the Wii games. Now I'm wondering if they support Wii games online and do they now charge for online play. I have never stopped having fun with Mario Kart on Wii. Running my kart into others and forcing them off the tracks to their death. It never gets old. I miss it.

Nintendo says it's backwards compatible. I was put off with the mention that it plays "many" (not "all") old Nintendo games, but that's referring to Virtual Console, which apparently now includes N64 and Gamecube. So it seems Wii game disks run fine on the Wii U, though there's no more compatibility with GC games (except for virtual console) and no more using the GC controller.

I'm reading a old article about the Wii U which says the Wii U reboots into the original Wii OS to play your old games. Did they ever release a firmware update to change this as well as the Wii U OS being slow as molasses?

It sounds like Lance and I need to figure out how to test our karting skillz. I wasn't the most elite guy on online play but I kicked a good share of buttocks.

I have acquired Mario Kart for the Wii from my sister-in-law. It even comes with this adorable little steering wheel.

My brother in law got the kids a Wii U along with Mario Kart 8. And it is true that all Wii games are playable on the WIi U and all our Wii controllers are usable. I haven't tried to play the old Wii games online yet so I don't know if that works. It's nice to instantly have 5 controllers for the Wii U.
