I jumped back into trying out Sins once again. Everything I learned about it, I had forgotten. I played the easy scenario and had a major jackass of an opponent always paying pirates to sack me. Between a huge pirate attack early in the game and building my first major ship as one that couldn't colonize, I fell behind. At least I figured out how to get access to more of the tech tree which had me puzzled for awhile. There is still much for me to learn because I sure didn't when I was playing it a long time ago. I think I need to explore faster. What are the basic tips at the beginning of a game?

My strategy is this:

Build two scouts, auto-explore. Fully upgrade the planet civ capacity.

Build a Colony capital ship, unlock the colonize ability, and go to the nearest planet with the capital ship. Make sure auto-colonize is off.

Build as many light frigates as I can w/o needing to increase ship capacity, followed by one colony ship, and begin clear out the nearby moons and asteroids.

Then I build civilian research structures to unlock trade ports (and arctic/volcanic settlements), colonize worlds when I have funds available to eliminate the underdevelopment penalty, and gradually push out.

Although, people have been known to call my gradual push out a 'rush'. :D

Unless I'm bored, I don't usually spend much time managing battles. While I'm waiting for resources, I'll examine the map for the choke points, and try to identify which enemy I'm going to eliminate first. I'll focus building towards them.

And along the way, I sneak in a few military research facilities to unlock the starbases, put them at the choke points and upgrade their defence first, weapons second.

And build tonnes of trade ports. Every planet gets a trade port, most get two. Desert worlds get 6.

And my defense against pirates is to settle so many worlds I don't care if they sack one or two. If I'm vasari, I'll scuttle my more expensive buildings when the pirates arrive to get some resources back; if I'm not, I'll let the pirates destroy the buildings to reduce the bounty against me; regardless, I let them kill the planet. When they leave, I'll return and recolonize.

What's with desert worlds that they trade better?

I now need to find how to auto-scout and such. I probably need to pour through the help menus. I'm going to try another game with your advice. I think I'll be good but I always need to start better than I do with RTS games. RTS games are my weak spot. I don't do as well with them as you or Auduma for sure. I was always behind others in AoE2 but I couldn't stop playing it.

In the bottom right of the screen is the context sensitive menu, laid out in two rows with four(?) columns. When you have a scout selection, the first row + first column icon should be "Explore". If you right click the icon, it'll turn to "auto-explore" and the scout will wander off to its inevitable death on new worlds.

Desert worlds support the largest capacity for logistics structures. Basically, you can build a lot more buildings there than at other places. Terran worlds are next, followed by arctic/volcanic, then asteroids and moons at the bottom.

The tutorial went over just one or two right-click functions on the menu. Sounds like I'll learn better by playing and screwing around.

If we can grab a day where we can jump into a game together, we can tackle a couple easy opponents and walk through the basics over voice chat.

I've got two other locals playing it here, too, who could use some additional tutorials.

That would be sweet. I need to make sure my webcam can double as a mic. If Auduma wasn't so busy with school, I'd bribe him to set up shop next to my PC and do some coaching.

If a bunch of you jump in, I can also play as an observer. Then I can watch what's going on, make comments, etc. It's a very handy feature.
