I'm sure LGM had mentioned this somewhere but a search failed to bring up the thread. Marvel pulled away from Cryptic (who then went on to create the successful Champions Online). Apparently Gazillion Entertainment (never heard of them, honestly) is releasing Marvel Heroes as F2P in 2013.It uses the Unreal 3 engine so the graphics and motion should be good but apparently you choose from a list of Marvel Comic characters to play and level up. I'm not enamored of the idea of strolling through an entire city populated by Hulks, Thors, and Spider Mans but the chance to play Squirrel Girl is intriguing. For those who aren't comic geeks, Squirrel Girl was a member of the Great Lakes Avengers in the late 80's, early 90's and had the power to communicate with and control squirrels.

And Squirrel Girl has basically beaten up nearly every villain in canon, if I remember right. I know a couple who did Doctor Doom/Squirrel Girl cosplay for Dragoncon a year or two ago, I think.

I just started fidgeting around with DCU Online on the PS3, because free is the price I can't pass up for an MMO (and I don't think my laptop will run SW:TOR). Superhero are my first MMO love and I do favor Marvel over DC, but... I want to build my own character. I don't want to play a copy of someone else in canon. That just sounds boring.

I'm hoping when it comes out of beta it will have better options because I completely agree with you. How do you like DCU? I was going to try it out but started playing CO first and never got around to it. CO is the first mmo that actually convinced me to spend money on it.

Marvel Heroes MMO is live and out of beta. It's... okay. Not as bad as some reviews describe it but nothing that makes me want to play it for hours. You choose between Thing, Storm, Hawkeye, and Scarlet Witch to start. As soon as you choose one the other choices are locked out. You can either pay to unlock the characters or hope to get a rare drop. I did get a drop for Hawkeye. Not really impressed with him. Thing's more fun. Controls are okay, I've played with better. Frankly, even though I'm a big fan of the superhero genre I'd choose NWN over this if I had to. It definitely feels like a hybrid of Diablo and Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Oh, and the BitRaider install program refused to work so I had to download it through Steam. I know that wouldn't bother Lance but I hate having to have another app running in the background. Also, this is definitely MMO, no playing offline which would make it more appealing to me than seeing 5 Things and 12 Hawkeyes all trying to fight the same crowd of thugs.

No character customization smacks of a very small investment in development. I would guess that the content would follow the same. I still have yet to read anything really positive about it.

It does have a tiny bit of customization in that you can equip different gear and you have a skill tree for your different attacks and defenses but for the most part it's pretty bland. Not as bad as some sour grapes have mede it out to be but not in the least spectacular. Like a coworker just said to me, "I don't want to be SpiderMan387."

That was Penny Arcade's take on the matter, as well.

I have a horrible confession to mke. I can't stop playing the game! There's something addictive about it. I might have been able to stop, but then I got a drop that unlocked Cyclops for me. He's so broken! One of his powers allows himself and anyone in his team to earn bonus xp so he's now at level 21 and rising like a meteor 'cause I keep putting points into his bonus ability. And his basic attack power is insane, ricocheting up to 4 times and if there's not enough targets it bounces back to hit a previous target again.

GameRevolution gave the current Marvel Heroes 2.2 a 4.5/5.0 rating. Not bad.

Your shout got me looking up Everquest Next. I'm not sure why everyone is using 'Next' though. Pespi Next, D&D Next, etc. I suppose numbering too high intimidates new users because even Call of Duty dropped numbering so that just means there is crap for fresh ideas in business marketing.

But I digress! It appears Pathfinder MMO is not being talked about by anyone outside of Paizo fans. That doesn't bode well at all. Everquest Next is getting a bunch of internet 'word of mouth' but I noticed Wildstar seems to be the new online mmo darling. It has an animation look like you are playing in a half serious/half cheeky cool saturday morning cartoon. I'm not a fan of animation but it looks fresh and lively among MMOs that all try to have the same realistic look. Of course everyone won't stop talking about the Elder Scrolls MMO until its out because the IP is big. There is still the next WoW expansion and the Secret World plus LotRO is still kicking butt as the premier FTP mmo. I just don't see PF MMO doing well among these heavy hitters when it's just EVE Fantasy Online. Maybe Dancey should have come up with something innovative since he doesn't have a big IP.

I like the more realistic look or something intentionally done to be anime/cartoonish. WoW was always in the middle of that. The art was enough of a cartoon while the metaplot and all was serious. Wildstar seems to get the cartoon feel just right where LotRO has the more serious feel. WoW has an Uncanny Valley perhaps?
