And I always drop my automatic weapon on the way by so she's got extra ammo before I run into die...

I find that some sections could be cleared by careful progression, sniping, etc. But that if I run in balls-to-the-walls, guns-a-blazin', I can usually break the enemy formation or down the heavy hitters, at the least. But that kind of tactic doesn't result in longevity, because I end up standing in the middle of all the enemies when it's all done, and usually out of ammo.

It was Halo 1 or 2 where I always found myself advancing too fast up one side of a more open zone. I ended up flanking or being behind the enemy and it was never a good tactic. The game AI is never confused by their assault line being turned into two flanks. Whereas I had to contend with battle chaos that didn't bother the game's tactics one bit.

I had two tactics for Halo. One was my Jihad Suicide Bomber role, the other was my Soft Target Decoy role where I'd wander out into an open area and when somebody moved to open fire on me LGM would snipe them. Sometimes I'd actually survive the maneuver.

The Mantis level is pretty awesome - it's basically a mecha, with unlimited ammo and missiles that over heats if you fire too much of either. The level has you clear out the hallways, then once outside you've got a tower defence scenario against Covenant air and land forces while the defense systems arm.

I'm pleasantly surprised to hear how good the game is. When Microsoft took over the series from Bungie, they made good additions to the series but I don't think many people believed they'd pull off an even better 4th game.

They hired a team of people whose sole job it was to play through all the Halo games, job shadow the Bungie guys, read all the Halo literature and compose the Halo Bible for the Microsoft team to use in development. They took it very seriously. I like it.

Incidentally, we've recruited a third person who's late to the party. We are still looking for a fourth victim to join us...

That's the way all game development should be approached. Alas, too often it is not.

No other studio could afford to do game development that way. The fact that Halo is the flagship game and sells the Xbox hardware is the only reason. And since the two sequel Halo games will be on the next gen system, Microsoft really wanted to get this right.

We finished the game yesterday. It was fabulous. The gameplay is...well, there hasn't been anything particularly innovative about the gameplay in three games. And since 343 is being really cautious about the take over, I wasn't expecting much new stuff. And as a super casual gamer, I'm happy that I didn't have to relearn all the game play elements. I could jump in and shoot.

The story is perfect. In fact, it's the best Halo story thus far. This game is all about character development, while annihilating swarms of bad guys with giant guns. The graphics are awesome, the music is perfect, the voice acting is terrific. There is little to dislike.

So, rented it from Redbox this weekend. Played it a little single campaign and some co-op with Zerxes. The small bit of the story I got through seems solid, not horribly enamored with the shooter part but then I'm not a shooter player by nature. Overall, I wouldn 't mind picking up a used copy in a few months.

We've just started the Spartan Ops part of the game. It's a narrative, but it doesn't feature any video animation - only in-game animation and diolgue. You take the roll of additional Spartans on planet doing the clean up ops, after Chief has left.

Each story is 5 chapters long, and each chapter is its own scenario. Basically, it's the game minus some of the glitz. But they are releasing additional chapters on an ongoing basis.

The missions are fun - it's mostly death and mayhem to Covenant forces. There are no load screens - the entire map gets loaded at once - which tends to make the scenarios a little less sprawling than the regular game levels, but makes for quick fun.

It's sort of the Direct to DVD equivalent of Halo 4 chapters. :D
