In the "late to the party because we were on a different continent category" Jenn and I picked up Halo 4 yesterday. Any other peeps got it? And have Live activated? And want to play through the 4-player co-op campaign mode with us? |

Is it a copy or a COPY? If he cannot log into Live, his box might have been de-registered for modding? |

My 360 is dead. But I just got a new one that is waiting for Christmas. My older brother fetched one as well and we'll be comparing games. I think I'll be buying myself a year subscription come the new year so I need to actually use it. I don't have Halo 4. We kinda burnt out on them some time ago. We would gather a bunch of tvs and consoles play Halo 1 and 2 until we bleed out of our eyes. I wish Blockbuster didn't go bust because it was so easy to grab a game for a bit but we have long since dropped Blockbuster via mail when they shuttered their last stores here. Come Christmas, I'll post my whole catalog and compare. |

Did you try Halo: Reach at all? By accounts, 434 basically took Halo Reach gameplay and crafted a work-of-art story. Sadly, in 4 player co-op, everyone players Master Chief, so that's a little odd. But we can play make believe and pretend we're all different members of an elite Spartan squad. |

I've heard nothing but good things for every Halo game. I think the silly aliens never really clicked with me even as the campaign stories got better. When the new xbox comes out next year, I'll be devouring all the games that weren't instant buys for me. |

I liked the 'morale' checks that the grunts had to make in Reach. If you were slaughtering their allies, they'd turn tail and run. It made them more believeable - they were basically alien conscripts. Meanwhile, the actual Covenant aliens were alien versions of the Spartan warriors, heavily armoured and very deadly. I skipped ODST and Halo 3, so I basically went from Halo 2 (which I loved) to Reach (which I thought was a slam dunk for gameplay and entertainment). |

I never finished Halo 2. I'm more of a campaigner than online pvp'er and the story in H2 washed a little thin for me and what I read about 3 indicated it was worse so I never tried it. For good story combined with fun killing I cite KotOR, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 1 & 2 (forget 3), and Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Captain America wasn't bad for story, and slinging that shield around and performing acrobatics to get places was fun but it doesn't quite reach the level of the other titles. |

Halo 4 is pretty good. The controls are from Reach and the story is very well done. My biggest complaint has been level design - not that the levels are bad, but the illumination is too dark. Reach featured huge, open levels with bright lighting. Jenn pointed out that Reach was on a planet scale, above ground and Halo 4 is on an artificial planet or underground. But...I dunno. My complaint still stands. I want to be able to clearly see what I'm shooting and to be distracted by impressive visuals and murdered by Covenant while I'm not paying attention. But maybe that's my Nintendo fanboi loves of bright colours and striking visuals. Everyone else seems to love these Bioshock/quasi-horror-fake-tension-because-we've-artificially-imposed-visual-limitations-in the-hopes-of-cheap-thrills in level design. I'm sitting 14 feet away from an 8' screen. I shouldn't be complaining that I can't see something clearly... Edited by Benevolance, Dec 12 2012, 06:16 PM.

Bioshock used light and dark to great effect but I could always see anything approaching me even if it was a silhouette. The only time I couldn't see anything was due to corners, large environmental objects or I was running like a bitch :( It suited the story because the place was an underwater utopia gone horribly wrong. The new Bioshock is brightly colored because it takes place on a floating city so it's open and bright. Visuals should fit the theme and purpose of the game. Anything underground will be brightly lit unless something has gone wrong or it's a natural cave. If you can't see what you're shooting at, it better be a horror game or the specific intention is close encounters. Even those reasons aren't good if not pulled off correctly. Dead Space pulls it off great: it's dark but light in the distance allows you to see movement elsewhere; the game thrives on enemies being able to get close to you in a hurry because it really plays on resource management (ie. limited ammo tells you not to blast away like crazy but monsters getting so close all the time tells you to shoot them all to hell; you end up fighting your nerves the whole game to do target leg shots to slow monsters and head shots). Yeah.. Halo doesn't really have any of that.. hrm. |

After our first foray I haven't noticed it being particularly harder for me to see and shoot things. That may just be chalked up to my overall skill at FPS games though. |

Wait a minute! Is he using "Oh, the lighting sucks. I can't see anything!" as an excuse why you pwn him all night in Halo 4? This is a whole different issue now. |

I need to finish Bioshock. And I'm envious of your visual acuity since I typically can't see much of anything in that game because of the general darkness with flashes of bright light from arcing electrical equipment. |

We had a lot of problems seeing anything in Bioshock. Between that and the horror aspect of it, we didn't end up playing much past the intro. |

You may have color and lighting adjustments to do. Bioshock plays crisp and clear at 50". I can make out everything well and it reviewed well when it came to graphical appearance. I wonder if projecting it causes a certain loss in HD games. |

I know our projector was one of the earlier HD ones, so it might not have had enough resolution to do the game justice. Though it projects to an area that's almost 100" too, so the larger format may cause a loss in the crispness of some of the edges. Regardless of that, I wouldn't have played through it anyway. After the first session my reaction was "I don't think I can play this when I'm home alone" (I was still on maternity leave at the time). I like an occassional scare, but I think scary games are too much for me. |

Aside from the awkward visual aspects, I found the Bioshock controls weak. I'm not the best FPS guy around, but I can usually hit a moving target with a steady stream of shots. It's a shame, because I liked the window dressing. The setting, the story...they were great! I wish I could have watched it via a different medium. |

A Bioshock movie or book would be great! I loved the setting too. Maybe we just need to get one of our other gamer friends to play through it for us so we can both watch them do it :D Perhaps The Pale Redcoat, if we can get him committed to show up? |

I liked the controls with the very fast selection of weapons. It was a bit like Assassin's Creed where it was different enough that it took awhile to become adept. After you reach that point, it feels very natural. Or it just doesn't work for you :) I remember thinking Assassin's controls were the stupidest thing imaginable.. until I played through the first mission and realized it was the smartest way ever to do the game. |

So once we cleared those first three spaceship levels, the game opened up into pure, unadulterated awesome. So many weapons to choose from, ways to clear levels, vehicles to hijack and drive, and ways to wreck things. It's bliss. |

Definitely back to the Halo I know and love when we hit a level where I can get back to my old strategy of being Lance's spawn point. It works where I just find a nice protected spot, preferably somewhere I can do a bit of sniping from or poke out of once in a while to draw enemy fire. Then Lance runs in and I wait until he dies, at which point I run backwards as far away from combat as possible so Lance can spawn again and run in. It's probably my most successful battle tactic and I've gotten quite good at it over years of playing Halo :D

That's hilarious. The few times I could get Elmira to co-op a fps game, I move from cover to cover to advance through levels methodically. All the while, Elmira stands in the wide open blasting away at anything that isn't me. It reminds me of being able to call in an A-10 Warthog aerial strike. She respawns and here comes my intense, short lived enemy suppression. She dies and the Warthog plane has to loop back to make the next strike. |

If I stand around blasting everything in sight I lose the ability to differentiate friend from foe and blast my team members too. Also . . . YAY! My typo made it in to a sig! |
