Synopsis: John Carter is a civil war veteran who is whisked to Mars by arcane/scientific means where he meets the giant green skinned Tharks and the reddish skinned people of Helium. Already trained in the arts of war, John Carter discovers his Earthly muscles give him the ability to leap incredible distances and can kill with a single blow of his fist (think original Superman but without the bullet proof skin). Of course, he's not very good at the simple things like walking, at first. A lot of professional reviewers have given the thumbs down to this movie but Zerxes and I had a good time watching it last Friday. I have read a few of the books that it was based on, Zerxes has not. The plot was fairly simple and straight-forward but then the books were and the somewhat stilted mode of talking actually matched that given to the characters by Mr. Burroughs. I must say that they've come a long way with mixing live action and cgi so that you're not distracted from the movie by the seams. His six-legged martian pet named Woola had us both laughing at places. Fully humanized with the antics of a Terran puppy and a face that a frog would have trouble loving, any kid or adult with the heart of a kid will love watching him as he zips around at speeds reminiscent of Oshiro with an unlimited Starbucks gift card. At a bit over 2 hours I don't recommend buying a large delicious sugary syrup water on your way in. My recommendation is to leave your seriousness at the door, grab a bucket of popcorn, Twizzlers, and something to drink, then sit back and enjoy. |

The trailers make it look fun. I think what why it's failing at the box office is due to it being a precursor to so much that came after it. Star Wars and all the other sci-fi were all birthed from Burroughs' works. It probably isn't going over well since sci fi has already improved over the original manuscript. And they didn't include Mars in the title. It takes place on Mars so put it in the title. It may help people get the gist of it before they sit down to watch. But at least Disney is biting it hard and losing millions on it. |

Yeah, I keep calling it John Carter of Mars which was confusing my wife. It's a shame it's not doing better. It's a good movie and being successful could open up the way to more good movie remakes such as Tarzan. Too many movie remakes are trying to be taken too seriously or else playing off a serious subject as something silly. I point at 21 Jumpstreet as I say that. From all I've heard it's more a comedy so its probably going the way of Starsky and Hutch and the likes. It was okay to do A-Team with a broad streak of humor since the series included it as well. |

I think Lord of the Rings could have suffered the same fate as John Carter if it wasn't such a massive undertaking by Tolkien. He set the bar extremely high for others to copy. But Tolkien was going over old ground (mythology, epics) in a new way. Burroughs was treading a new sub-genre of 'planetary romance' and pulp that wasn't explored before. There was a big opening for others to improve upon it so perhaps it's not feeling as unique to people who are well exposed to sci fi. Also, did the movie come across as pulp romance or more of modern adventure? I haven't seen a good pulp film since LA Confidential more than a decade ago. I expect the A-Team to be cheesy since the show was. I wouldn't mind it being real serious either. 21 Jump Street just looks like it lacks any cleverness in the humor. May as well call it COPS Goes to White Castle. |

Yes, I'd say describing it as a good pulp film would not be inaccurate. Strangely enough, I only recently read the John Carter novels and while it was obviously dated I still found them enjoyable. I have what I guess is the somewhat unique ability to enjoy novels and movies in the context of their era. Of course I read many of the Tarzan books as a kid so was already familiar with Burroughs style of writing. His writing style could be somewhat offensive to modern politically correct readers because of the heavy use of stereotyping but I just put that down as the norm for his time and read past it. You can find a fairly comprehensive list of his novels in his Wikipedia entry. |

I never gave the Carter novels a try because I hated Tarazan. I may have missed out. But I want to see this movie, because it's full of D&D monsters. |

I'm afraid the aliens would bother me but I don't have anything else to read currently so I'll have to check out the first he wrote and go from there. I want to rent it especially now that I know they kept at least some of the pulp adventure. I was afraid Disney was going to Prince-of-Persia the Carter movie. They just found a different way to tank it without ruining the actual movie. I'm a bit impressed! |

Heh. That reminds me, the Prince of Persia movie came out. Ummm....two years ago. I probably can't catch it in theaters now, but maybe I can track it down on DVD. :D |

Do you really want to watch a couple hours of Jake Gyllenhaal? Mediocrity at its best. The movie isn't worth mining ideas for gaming and the plot is extremely predictable. There's no cool acrobatics or awesome use of the dagger :( |

Two hours of Jake Gyllenhaal? There's a scantily clad chick in it too, if I remember correctly. I think we could make this work. Though maybe just as a rental. |

I never could hear the word clearly, was already losing hearing in the voice range by the time the Ferengi were introduced as fairly regulars. Working in a call center is rough on the ears. |
