Pi sucks, e is where it's at! Seriously, though, it's pretty much an arbitrary number. All these math classes have pretty much taught me that its actual value means nothing compared to what it represents. And it's more typical for CS majors and the nerds of the nerds to rant and rave about pi - as a CE, I just round to 3 and get on with the work :P Edit: Zombie week ended on the 3rd :P Edited by Auduma, Mar 14 2012, 02:14 PM.

Rounding explains some of those blueprints I've seen that never matched reality! Engineers are probably a bit better than architects. I've seen lovely designs that serve no purpose but to push materials beyond their limits. Keeps me employed! One of the most aggravating persons I had to deal with was a builder's son who was taking on whole house builds himself. He came back after graduating from BYU for architecture design (my Mormon stereotype is how they are all so very nice at the same time they are condescending or practicing elitism). According to his view, I was some grubby lackey working on his house. I was doing some custom stucco trim on the front of a brick house. It was very extensive and he gave me a detailed drawing for the whole foyer section. None of it was to the correct scale and it couldn't be readily converted. I went about doing the design by applying the ratio of the trim compared to the house from the drawing; then applied it to the actual measurements. It works out perfectly and the appearance is exact. He comes along and starts questioning how I figured out the angles and curvature. I explained to him exactly what I did. If he was worried about it, he shouldn't have given me the drawing and done a strict conversion. He can't find anything wrong in what I did but something didn't sit well with him. He tells me that one of the curving slopes needs to be moved over. I told him that would be no problem at all and I have him show me exactly where it should start. HE MOVES THE ORIGIN SPOT 1/2 INCH! That changed the sloping angle less than a quarter of a degree. I wanted to punch him in the ear. This thread is now about me complaining. |

Architects and engineers have butted heads since both professions existed :P That guy definitely sounds like he just came right out of school. I'm guessing he used a screwy architectural scale? |

I think it was the usual 1/4"=1' scale that I see on prints. If not, it was 1/8" which is common too. The problem is that the width and height of the walls did not match up at all. It wouldn't have been bad if the scale was off in such a way where I could just multiply a measurement by a simple multiplier. The difference was something weird like .33651.... so I used a trim:wall ratio instead. He knew it was off when he gave it to me because he told me. Yes, he was right out of school. I thought better of him because was around jobs with his dad every summer and I assumed he was learning hands-on. It speaks volumes when the trim carpenters worked for his dad for 20 years and then quit; refusing to work for his dad anymore as long as the son is involved. We did something similar after he screwed us and another contractor over warranty work. He's completely unprofessional is the short of it. |
