We visited my parents on Oscar night, which is the only reason I knew that Oscar night was occurring. Aside from the usual reassurance that I am completely out of touch with popular culture and oddly comforted by that fact, I was surprised to learn that this year was the first time Gary Oldman has been nominated for an Oscar. And he didn't win. Dubya tee eff?

They gave Oscars to one of the guys from Flight of the Conchords and the guy who plays Dean Pelton on Community. That was pretty much all I cared about, since none of the movies I saw were nominated for anything interesting.

But, yeah, how has Gary Oldman never won an Oscar? That dude is fantastic.

He hasn't been in films that get noticed by Academy voters. He needs to do an overly serious period piece that's not about an erotic blood drinker. Oscar isn't into kink.

Durango won best animation. The trailer had me not wanting the kids to see it because it look idiotic. We rented it and it was fantastic. I'm not convinced it was made for kids at all though. Past the intro scenes the movie drops any pretense at being a kid flick. The Eastwood cameo and Westerns name dropping was cool.

Real Steel didn't win anything either. Seriously should have.

Gary Oldman is, quite probably, the greatest actor alive today. He can be in anything, no matter how terrible the script, and it is made better by his being there.

An article I read talked about all his villain roles and how Harry Potter broke him free of the villain mould. And I guess that is true to an extent, but he did a lot of early stuff where he wasn't an insane villain. The thing is, he can make anything believable, and finding believable villains is tough for Hollywood, so toss in Gary Oldman and you are saved from a mediocre script.

Him and Tim Roth both. Man, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Gotta go watch that again.
Oh god! Gary Oldman needs to do a villain role in a Bond movie! He could be attempting to murder Bond with a convulated Rube Goldberg machine that uses cats and marbles as the ultimate instrument of death, and you'd be all, "Heh. That makes total sense why he's doing this. That Bond guy is such a prick."

I don't have anything add, that movie is just sheer frakking brilliance, and I thought that the point needed to be made again.
