I should put a sign up telling my neighbors to thank the city PD for a crappy stairs rebuild when I'm done.

As LGM knows I've been trying to fix up the front steps on my house. Unfortunately, the weather has not been coordinating with my days off to allow me to paint the wood which has been cut to fit for quite some time now. Well, Kennesaw police left a nice little notice on our garage door saying we were in violation of city code regarding keeping steps maintained. Hmm, steps have been removed, there's a neatly stacked pile of the old lumber waiting for a some way to dispose of it. I wonder if the owner of the house is, I don't know, maybe FIXING THE FRICKING STEPS?

Anyway, after unsuccessful communications with the idiots running the department of public harassment I went ahead and started priming the wood yesterday. Keep in mind this has to be done outside because I"m using a paint sprayer and there's insufficient room and/or motivation to paint all this wood by brush. Anyways, come 9pm it starts raining and the pain is still too wet to handle (if you want fast drying paint I don't recommend oil based) so I now have half primed boards that are soaking wet and will take forever to dry out since I've halved the surface area from which the moisture can leach out. Oh, and at least one of the boards had paint still wet enough to leave it on my hands as I was carrying them in this morning before leaving for work.

Yeah, I love our PD which can't keep people from stealing crap out of locked garages but are excellent at making sure repairs are done in a rushed, slipshod manner.

Police are only enforcement. You were ratted out by a neighbor because police don't care at all about your front steps. Usually Marshals, not police, leave warnings for counties and city managers do it for cities. They must be forcing the cops there to do that crap. And never say police can't keep people from committing crime. 95% of their job is response unless you want a cop on every corner. You problem is with a neighbor or two.

We roll paint on entire deck packages before building. For pressure treated, you have to use Killz as a primer and then paint. Treated lumber will bleed the paint and it will peel badly. Chemicals don't get along. Use a roller and you could do the steps in 30 minutes in the garage with the door open.
I keep getting letters about leaving a bag of mortar or a tool on my front porch from the HOA. It takes a hundred tools and bits for tile work that I always forget a couple things when cleaning up. But now I figured out how long till I receive a notice and how to get them to constantly give me new warnings without getting charged a fee. I'm currently screwing with them as I'm on my 8th separate warning. Each one is different so ill see how long until they get pissed or just tired of the process.

In Canada, neighbours ignore you.

And thankfully, too! Because, believe me, it takes forever to get any projects done around our place, too. This year we never did get around to putting in our garden on the patio, so it was just empty buckets all season. And nobody complained! Because we all ignore each other! Happiness is ignorance!

I always laugh at people who complain about HOAs. If you do live in one, you should have read the list of rules because it's a binding contract. People who don't live in one complain about them to which is quite ridiculous. I read all the rules before we bought and I'm glad we have one because there are a couple of people who would drag values down.

We actually have the management company ride around the community once a week after some of us publicly dressed down the one HOA nazi we had. The guy wasn't even on the loan of the house as he was a live-in boyfriend. He was giving the nearby milfs a whole bunch of crap about the kids leaving toys in the yard overnight. He lived in an entirely different section of the neighborhood. By section, I mean it has its own entrance, isn't connected to our section whatsoever, has it's own amenities and so forth. Apparently he took it upon himself to snoop around and see what he could find at homes far away from his. If I don't have an issue with my neighbors, this guy shouldn't. The whole thing went down pretty funny for everyone. We have an internet forum where the women lambasted him for all to see. He started trying to site fire safety codes for toys that were next to the fire hydrant, claiming he was a local volunteer firefighter. He was informed that a real firefighter lived there and there was no volunteer force locally. He was humiliated into silence with that and a few other things.

I think it's about time for me to leave my trash can at the curb for too long next week and get another letter.

I'm not a member of the HOA. Which is probably why they hate me so much. That, and the fact I told them they could hold their breath until they're blue in the face if they thought I would actually join. I was actually thinking about joining so the kids could have access to the rinky dink wading pond they call a pool when a HOA board member lied to me and that killed any chance. She told me I couldn't fence in the front yard and that the back fence couldn't extend past the corner of the house. Being on a corner lot you can imagine how much yardage that prevented from being fenced. I went to City Hall and spoke to the woman on duty at the time. She gave me a copy of the section regarding fencing and explained quite clearly that the city only asked that front yard fences be limited to 6' and back yard to 8'. Oh, and that they didn't give a whit about what materials were used so if I wanted chicken wire fencing that was fine with them. So yeah, I already figured somebody complained.

Probably the same person who got them out there last year for not mowing the grass for 4 straight weeks while it was raining fairly continously. Interestingly, I wasn't the only one with tall grass but I was the one who got a notice. I left a polite voicemail to the number given on the notice, stating if they wanted the yard cut while the ground is soaked and slipping under the mower because my homeowners insurance wasn't going to pay. So yeah, I guess if chowing down on donuts every day hasn't reduced their cognitive functions they may have personal feelings in the matter :D

See, that's what makes me shake my head. LEOs don't care and it's just crap they have to deal with when they have to do ordinance stuff. Most of them are very willing to shoot you when you make comments like "why aren't you catching real criminals" and the like. They enforce all laws whether you are jaywalking or your killing. They don't have a choice in the matter regardless of what they want to do.

I'm a wee bit pro-LEO.

I'm not against LEO's and I've never told them to go catch real criminals. I've been friends and neighbors with several over the years and they would have all looked at the fact that it's being worked on, albeit slowly, and said "have a nice day, hope you can finish the work soon."
