Legends have always held that the Vikings had a magic stone that allowed them to navigate by the sun even on cloudy days and even after the sun had recently set. Scientists have found one. |

ODP linked me onto this yesterday. We were discussing how much cooler these were than magentic compasses. As I pointed out, if someone boards your ship, you can hit him with the sunstone. But just try intimidating someone with a compass. |

When I was a kid I had a compass my father had recovered from a sunken ship. Sucker was set in a 10" diameter metal base with a heavy crystal top encasing the wheel in mineral spirits. Weighed a few pounds. I guarantee someone would notice getting hit by it :D

I've been threatened with a compass once before, but that was in geometry class in 10th grade. |

I must take a trip to Iceland and find one of these. When the satellites go down, I'm going full pirate on the high seas. I just don't feel right about being a pirate with GPS available. ODP is still around? If he's gaming, he better get over here and keep us up to date. |

Don't think his new work lets him access message boards, so he's migrated to Google +. That's where I'm keeping in touch with him. |

I will have one of these navigation crystals and will go on a grand adventure using it to navigate my way to find all the missing gamers. There will be great hijinks and adventure as I find the long lost online forum gamers. In the final voyage, I will get utterly lost only to discover Lance and Kishi in the woods waiting at a game table for us (one of you will be dead from a recent duel). |
