Yeah, telling me I have to buy a $300 e-reader to enjoy their $3 comic just doesn't wash with me.

"due to DC Comics plan to sell the digital format of their top 100 graphic novels exclusively through Amazon's Kindle Fire, BAM Stores are currently removing physical copies of these titles from our shelves." "We will not promote titles in our stores showrooms if publishers choose to pursue these exclusive arrangements that create an uneven playing field in the marketplace."

I have a feeling Amazon wanted this and got DC to go along by target advertising the comics with Fire. I wonder if DC even thought about Bam's point of view. Only fans will lose out.

The serial comic distribution model is all but dead. Watching Marvel and DC react to the changed marketplace is a bit like watching the RIAA try to squash file-sharing in its infancy.

I don't view it as a online vs. brick/mortar issue. Exclusive distribution contracts keep showing up for good reasons without problems. It's when another company feels slighted because it creates unfair competition it rubs wrong and they decide to retaliate. I see it quite often with phone companies but they are giving exclusives to all carriers which has become common practice (minus the iPhone). The biggest issues will be when the content creator decides to bypass the entire distribution model and go straight to consumers. Distributors will have a hard time successfully retaliating. Consumers may suffer in the interim but eventually we should win out in pricing and content creators will make more per unit.

Now that is how you bypass stores and distributors, jack up your profit and sell dirt cheap. I still think it odd that DnD beat comics and other niche hobbies to it.
