Hmm, could this be the one that draws Lance back into the MMO's? It seems that WotC has been more protective of it's product image since 4e's release which makes me have hopes for the quality of the game when it's released. No mention whether it's FtP or PtP.

I've been doing a wait and see to this. Cryptic is involved which is great but Atari still is the big guy holding the license which absolutely sucks. The latest D&D dlc for Xbox Live, Dungeons of Daggervale, nearly sucks completely. It was pushed out by Atari. I don't know what became of Hasbro's lawsuit against Atari but it appears Atari was able to keep the license but can't just sit on it. With what has come out so far, they may as well just sat on it.

I'm REALLY hoping Cryptic will do all the work and it will come out cool. Atari is still notorious for pushing projects out before they are ready (ie. everything they produced in the last 5 years). I really hate being negative about this project so I'm hoping my fears are unjustified!

I'm not really a fan of the MMO concept. I like my games to have a beginning, middle and end.

If they could figure out fan created content (a DM!) into an MMO, I bet we could lure you in with no end in sight!

That is what Neverwinter Nights allowed. You could host your own server, run as persistent world like an MMO, but have it under DM control. Speaking of which, the Stanley Cup finals are over in less than two weeks. We should play some online games again. :D

It's not as much an MMO as it is a Neverwinter Nights with a stronger online play aspect. They do include the Foundry toolkit that makes it even easier (according to the article) to quickly create dungeons and adventures as well as fleshing out NPCs much greater with dialogue trees. They will have a ranking system so you can find who has made good adventures.

Since Cryptic is primarily know for MMOs like Star Trek Online and Champions Online, it's reasonable to assume Neverwinter might also fall within the same category. From what's been said so far, it sounds more like an action-RPG with MMO-like elements built in. There will be an auction house, for instance, a bank, and open spaces within Neverwinter to wander around and interact with others. A majority of the content, though, is more straightforward and follows along with a story.

It's based on the 4e ruleset and after release they want to roll out more classes from PHB 2 & 3. They are mulling over having an iTunes-like store to allow for fans to make money from content creation. It looks like they're figuring out a way to keep engaged players. If they have anywhere near the success of Sims, the content would be massive and very good. The Sims has some insane player involvement.

The fact that they are pushing the majority of the content along a storyline is a good thing. That's where DDO kind of lost focus and fell flat. The NPC tools and dungeon tools before were already impressive. If Cryptic can improve those tools, this is going to be awesome.

The awesome thing about NWN2 was that Cryptic studios was developing it. The horrible thing is that Atari has sold Cryptic off to a Chinese game company. In an unrelated article from GI magazine, Atari's current CEO is set on selling off its console and pc development assets to focus solely downloadable content and games. They have been sucking as a game developer for more than a few years. Now, their D&D Daggerdale on XBLA barely scraped together a 5 or 6 in most reviews. Maybe they'll have better luck with even smaller app games.

That said, NWN2 site was down for a time but it is now back up. I have no clue if Cryptic is still on it but I highly doubt it as Atari has the D&D license. Without Cryptic, this most likely will suck. The best case scenario is Atari not doing anything with the license until it finally reverts back to Hasbro. Hasbro already sued them once about inactivity, maybe they'll try it again.

Maybe the Chinese will keep the Cryptic development team and let them do their job unhindered? [/hopeful tone]

Maybe the Chinese can just release a Chinese knockoff, and we'll get a kickass Tunnels and Trolls game?

I won't play Tunnels and Trolls. It made Tom Hanks kill people.

You're thinking of Mazes and Monsters :)

Tunnels and Trolls was the first off-shoot of D&D. I'd rather play Mazes and Monsters with girls in chainmail bikinis, hang out with Tom Hanks and enjoy some spelunking.

My house rules will include nerf weapons, everyone stays at least 10' from me and I'm carrying a firearm. After that, it's all about best buddies and having fun.. with my eye on the nutty cleric.

So...while the other players in costumes spelunk the girls in chainmail bikinis you'll just be standing there, holding a gun, and watching. Yeah. I can't see why our chosen hobby ever gets bad press. :D

The house rules only applied to males. I just don't want to come across as sexist. Violent is alright. The tv learned me this.

It's because I rolled a 1 and I'm trying to stay in character. I'm normally much better! Honest!

Two years later the game has gone into open beta. I quickly realized during character creation that the mechanics are based on 4e rules so naturally I picked a dwarf fighter since that is the class/race I'm most familiar with in that system. If you should decide to play look for Hargrim on Mindflayer. Be warned you'll want to turn down the background music fairly quickly as it's quite... repetitive, and the graphics are disappointing considering I have it set at 1900:1080. It is beta so there are likely to be improvements. My initial impression is can be fun to play but I'll not be sinking any money into it until PWE decides to work on Champions Online more.

I would love to see a 4e Baldurs Gate before Neverwinter because it would be the best turn base combat ever. I can't imagine anyone being too happy about a new D&D game using the latest passed over rule set. As long as Atari drug out the licensing with little to show for it, I'm a tiny bit glad the game won't have a fresh dnd luster.

If there's one thing NWN lacks, it's luster. Seriously, the pixelated edges even at hi res is kind of disappointing. If judging just on graphics I'd have to say DDO has it beat hands down.

Is the game already set up to allow player-created content? Interesting.

Did Cryptic do the City of Heroes/Villains game? That's one of the few MMOs I've really gotten into, so it could be interesting. I'm playing around with a couple characters to see which one I like best, we'll see how it goes.

Cryptic did, yes but they've been a bit lackluster lately. Or at least I had better expectations for them.
