I swear networking gets more difficult with every version of Windows.

I started a very long descriptive tale of my problems but you know what? Screw it with a #2 Phillips. Short story is access between the computers is intermittent, requiring me to cross ping computers to get them to access each other for a short period of time. And the laptop running vista home premium just hates everybody although just now it has decided it can actually access both the other computers but still won't let them see what cards it holds. I'm sure this will change by the time I click the Post Topic button below.

Microsoft is a smart poker player that doesn't reveal cards!

Your router doesn't have networking software (or software that works on Win7)? There surely is something out there that let's you bypass having to rely on Windows.

And then you'd be running Linux :(

Speaking as someone who has set up a lot of impromptu lans for gaming in his day, I've found that the networking experience has gotten easier with each iteration.

Mind you, I'm disabling a lot of the firewall features. And thinking back on it, locating the networking information on Vista is a pain. And configuring a manual IP with IP4 and IP6 both installed sucks harsh.

So to qualify, Windows networking has gotten better as long as you can plug it in and everything works and you disable all of the security features.

I did turn off the firewalls for testing but no change. They were immediately reinstated.

Did Windows automatically pop them back up or did you? You're not supposed to run Windows with their firewall.

I put them back on manually. I am behind my router firewall but I'm just a tad paranoid :)

That's just rediculous. If you're behind a hardware firewall, why are you bothering with windows software firewall? It's going to cause more problems than it protects against.

The first thing I did when I got XP or reinstalled was to disable Windows firewall.

In the past I've actually found out about being infected by the software firewall notifying me of a program trying to access the internet when the antivirus had failed to detect it. Hardware firewalls won't do that.

I rely on my anti-virus firewall. You lay down money for a good one and it's superior to both MS and a hardware one.
