Jenn and I host a lot of get togethers at our place and we have a rather large liquor stock. The common problem that results is that nobody is ever sure what they want to drink. We decided to remedy this situation by creating a menu, done in a mad-inventor/steampunk style. We don't want to put too many options in the book - that puts us right back where we started with giving our guests choices - but we're considering a rotation of different drinks. So far we have on our list: Gin martini Gimlet Manhattan 5 spice side car Greek martini Tokyo tea We'll have a list of the various 'straight up' drinks we offer. I'm also considering a list of shooters, to be served in stoppered test tubes as 'Miraculous Restoratives'. But we don't do a lot of shooters ourselves, so I'm open to some tasty suggestions. Ibid re: the cocktails. Anything basic and tasty that I'm overlooking? |

You might like this one: Dr. Funk 2-1/2 oz dark Jamaica or Martinique rum 1/4 oz Pernod or Herbsaint 1/2 oz lemon juice 1/4 oz grenadine 1/4 tsp sugar 1 lime Add liquid ingredients to crushed ice in shaker. Cut lime in half and squeeze into shaker, dropping in the shells; add the sugar. Shake well; pour the contents into a 12-oz chimney glass; fill rest of glass with charged water and decorate with fruit or freshly picked geranium leaf. Serve with straws. I'd also recommend a Dr. Fong of Tahiti that I haven't had in years but there's a lot of confusion on how that one is made. I remember it had about 5 different light and dark rums and a few fruit juices as well. It had just enough kick to prepare me for playing Amaretto Uno until dawn. |

Aside from having to keep Pernod (I've never seen herbsaint) that looks pretty good. I imagine it tastes like a beach drink? |

We were able to ditch the kids and have a romantic dinner for our 9th anniversery tonight :) We discovered a wine I actually like. I usually despise them. It's a sweet, Italian white wine called Moscato. I have to say it tastes like many other common white wines but with less bitterness due to sweetening. |

You should try Arbor Mist blackberry wine. Available at a fine Publix near you. Actually all the Arbor Mist wines are quite delicious with a somewhat sweet, fruity flavor to them. I would imagine it would be very popular with men trying to get young ladies drunk. So, do you like it Lance? |

Ah! I am not a wine drinker, and I prefer to ply the ladies with spirits. It's more affordable in the long run. |

I'm not either but this reminded me more of the liquor malts and other girly drinks. In any case, wine (and any sweet liquor) is one of the worst things to get drunk on. Schnapps are good to ply the ladies with but the same thing happens.. wear plastic if you plan to fall asleep next to them. |

I don't believe a person can ever go wrong with a dry gin martini. And by the second Lance-size drink, most dissenters aren't able to argue the point. |

Until we went out last night, I forgot how much better midori sours are outside of Utah. Way more midori, way less sour. My friend Kay refers to them, apparently, as "Devin Drink #1." She says she's still waiting to see what "Devin Drink #2" is. |

Huh. We usually stock those ingredients, since the Tokyo Tea and Japanese slippers both use Midori. The whiskey sour mix...is it just a whiskey sour? Or is it something else? Or do your Midori sours usually just feature the melon liqueur and s&s mix? |

It's just the midori and the sweet and sour mix. But Utah has restrictions on how much alcohol they can put in a drink- 1.5 ounces, I think, and they use little electronic bottle toppers that measure each pour- so it ends up being a lot more of the sweet and sour than it has alcohol. |

Because this isn't the dark ages. Sheesh! A modern man can handle 1.5 oz of alcohol, imbibed carefully and cautiously over the course of several hours. |

It's so the Mormon Church has an easy way to keep track of who is a heretic and/or heathen. |

You know, if the Catholic Church can modernize and even apologize for the past transgressions.. the Mormon Church can turn the corner too. I expect a good change within a 1000 years or whenever the Supreme Court tells them to change something yet again. |

We shall try the Midori sours on Friday, if we still have melon liqueur. We've been trying to devastate our old stock, to make room for a newer, sleeker alcohol collection. The midori may have already fallen prey to our machinations. I have found that the Crystal Light lemon lime drink mix stands in exceptionally well as a 0 calorie sweet and sour mix. It also keeps a little longer in the fridge. |

Well the Mormon leader did finally have a vision from God that told him that black men can be leaders in the church. It's total coincidence that it occurred just after the Supreme Court told them they had to make the change. |

After looking around at recipes a bit, I'll just take a moment to explain that anyone who says you put Sprite (or a similar lemon-lime soda) in a Midori sour is a lying, lying bastard, and you should ignore anything else they told you. Midori, sour. Two ingredients, it's all there in the name. |
