I've been considering the Gold membership, too, and Modern Warfare 2 sounded interesting. I just lament the lack of adventure/rpg games these days. Those games seem entirely relegated to the handhelds these days. Speaking of which, I should decide on a game for my trip. It's time to break out the DS once more! |

The shooters are becoming very adventure/rpg in design but there is a lack of fantasy in the Tolkienesque sense. The best exception is Dragon Age which is perfectly awesome. Fable II was very good but I didn't find it as great as it was rated.. obviously others disagree with me. For sci-fi, Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 are both rpg games that are shooters. Open world/sandbox games such as Fallout 3, Far Cry (1 & 2) and Borderlands are very high rated games that are heavy in story and roleplaying but again, they are shooters. Shooters topped off in greatness just as shooters with the Halo series so developers are adding more depth to them. They are receiving heavy story, RPG elements or both in a variety of ways. Modern Warfare 1 & 2 are HUGE on story but you lack choice which you get in the previously mentioned games. You need to play Dragon Age :) |

I'm not talking RPG elements, I'm talking the full blown RPG, with leveling characters, constantly tweaking weapon and armour combinations, class advancement decisions, and turn-based (or nearly turn-based) tactical combat. I like the fact that modern games are delving more into stories, but I don't like the fact that they are playing more and more live movies. And the side quests are "find the dongle! find the other dongle!" Don't mind me, I'm just old school and remembering better times. And keep off my lawn. |

Turn based games haven't disappeared but I think developers see it as a roadblock to story immersion. All the other things can be found in Dragon Age. With its success, expect to see a Dragon Age sequel and perhaps another developer or two trying to out-do it. I have been finding new armor and weapons and magic items that I swap around my party members for who they best fit. I've stopped myself from looking online to find where all the cool stuff is for at least my first play through. Leveling lets you upgrade stats, skills and take new "powers" depending on being a warrior, mage or whichever specialization. Didn't I already talk about this in Cogs? :P Since it's not turn based, there is a menu that lets you set tactics and actions for characters you're not controlling based on several dozen (if not more) factors. I'm unsure the limit of actions to set based on conditions as I couldn't think of what I wanted any one group members doing beyond a half dozen conditional factors. Find the dongle was a problem to me in Assassin's Creed. I'm reading on the sequel and they've changed that at least. Instead of finding dongles, you find things relevant to the story or things that increase your holdings/riches which directly affects upgrading your weapons and other things. It appears Assassin's Creed II is getting rid of your complaints since many gamers shared them and they've included puzzles and such without making them mini-games. I hate mini-games that are in games that aren't Lego or Mario Party. Edited by lgm, Jan 2 2010, 06:23 PM.

I briefly glanced through the Dragon Age post, but by the description there I thought it was a tabletop RPG trying to lure video game players, not a video game with tabletop elements. |

Two suggestions for you Lance: Advent Rising doesn't have level advancement per se, but you do improve skills/abilities by using them and I was totally immersed in the story to the point I was curing the deaths of certain npc's, etc... KotOR and KotOR II give you complete control over your character development using pretty much D20 3.x rules. My singular complaint was having to obviously (to me) stupid decisions in order to play darkside. Alas, I played it enough times that I pretty much knew exactly how to tweak the characters for combat, but I still couldn't tell you where every single item is, etc... |

That was discussing the pen-and-paper RPG Green Ronin put out in support of the Bioware video game. Pretty much everyone I've heard talk about the video game loved it. |

I forgot to mention Fallout 3 has levels, skill advancement, enhancing feats, raising of stats, various armors depending on character build (stealth vs weight vs protection), a massive amount of weapons (sometimes it's just fun to use a baseball bat on someone even if you have the pneumatic sledge hammer..) and other character features. It's near future post-apocalyptic however. There are 4 expansions to it with one or two raising the level cap and all adding items, story and more to the mix. Bioshock is one of greatest games where you really have to choose between builds and powers. The story is fantastic and the game has great replay based on the fact that you'll want to go through it a couple extra times to focus on alternate powers and abilities you couldn't afford to exploit the first time. You could change out bought powers/abilities but you either had to backtrack or discover another machine that lets you alter your DNA. They were uncommon so you had to be smart about what you wanted. Bioshock 2 is forthcoming. Consoles also have the Morrowind series with Oblivion being the last one but I have found the series very dull compared to more focused yet open game worlds. The scaling it in grows boring where sometimes you want to grow stronger so you can revisit a place and beat the hell out of them. There's a raider camp in Fallout that I went all Terminator on with my level maxed character.. oh yeah! Dragon Age was a game in development before they approached Green Ronin. I'm unsure how much he really wanted to go old school with the rpg versus how much he had to so he could match the game better. It's a good fit for new gamers anyhow. It is the spiritual sequel to the Baldur's Gate series. No license but same developer who wanted to return to an updated but same game play. It worked in the past and it's working again :) EA has actually changed their tune, dropping licenses and taking risk on new IP. Finally! If you're stuck on Tolkien fantasy similar games, there is a lack. But it sounds like you could be overlooking quite many rpg games currently released in the last 4 or so years. Stronger story and rpg is where games have been moving to since the Halo series. Edited by lgm, Jan 4 2010, 05:43 PM.

You know, we talked about Deus Ex Invisible War on the phone and I think Lance would like it. Xbox Magazine gave it a 9.1 rating and you got to select different upgrades to your different body parts. I liked the leg upgrades that allowed you to run faster, jump higher, and move more quietly. The last was awesome for sneaking up on people to crush in the backs of their skulls with your enhanced strength. And there were 4 ore 5 possible endings based on decisions you made throughout the game. Dang, I think I need to go play it again :) |

The first Deus Ex was awesome. I never played the sequel, since I didn't have an XBox, and buying PC games was a fool's errand in the town I was living in at the time.

I played the sequel and it made me wish I had a copy of the first. I'm also still waiting for the sequels to Psi Ops: Mindgate Conspiracy, Advent Rising. I'll buy the 360 to play them on. |
