For you people who are better with computers than I am. So, I've been waiting to upgrade my OS from Vista to Windows 7. I can't do an upgrade, so I apparently have to do a clean install. This will, as I understand it, wipe clean the drive I install it onto, yes? So my question is this- if I've got a hard disc that's partitioned into a C drive and D drive, will it just clear off the C drive? It isn't going to format the actual, physical drive, is it? Just curious. |

I think that depends on whether it will reformat and repartition the hard disk, or just reformat the existing partitions. When installing Windows 2000, it asks that question as part of the install process. Assuming the drive is already formated to NTFS, I don't see where it would be a problem. But this is problem a good opportunity to say, "Back up any work you don't want to lose." :D |

It's really a largely academic question, as my D drive is just where I put things from our external drive for use when I'm out of the house. :) I was just curious. |

I concur with lance. We were doing something similar and we wiped partial to have a nice clean section to install |

I have upgraded, nothing unexpected seems to have been deleted, and at no point did my laptop catch on fire! Flawless victory!

Hey now, I walked people through reinstalling and upgrading Windows for years and they typically went flawlessly. You just have to be prepared for Mr. Murphy to spring out of the corners of the computer case annd startle you. |

It actually went really smoothly. Most of the stuff I was really careful to back up would have been backed up anyway by the Windows transfer thing, but I figure better to have done it myself than find myself proven wrong. I didn't have any real problems with Vista, since I got into it late enough, but so far Windows 7 looks pretty brilliant. I love a lot of the interface changes. Really my only issues with the upgrade weren't with Windows, but with Acer instead. But none of the functions lost in the upgrade were really vital. Edited by Kishi, Dec 29 2009, 11:53 AM.

Probably not. Despite this computer model being sold as set up for a Windows 7 upgrade, it wasn't one of the models that was supported by the Acer upgrade program, hence having to do a clean install. Because of that, the install wiped out all the Acer software that was pre-installed. For the most part, I don't care as it was a lot of the same sort of crap every new computer comes with. The only thing I'm likely to miss is the on-screen display when I adjust the volume. And I need to make sure my webcam still works, but that's not something I use a lot anyway. As Acer hasn't given me any way to update any of their software without reverting to Vista, it's likely the stuff they gave me is gone.

Doesn't the Acer site have those utilities available for download? |

Well, yeah, but only if you go to their website and find your model number and click on the Utilities tab. But that seems like too much trouble for me- I can only apparently get through the first two steps before I get discouraged and give up to go do something else like look at Nerf guns online. Morgan got me a Maverick for a late Christmas present last night that she's going to take apart and paint for me, but she's apparently waiting for this one to come out in the spring before she buys one for herself. Sorry, what were we talking about? Edited by Kishi, Dec 29 2009, 02:15 PM.

It seems like Nerf is sweeping across the nation. My son has plenty of ammunition, thanks to my brother, to harass me all day long. I may have to buy into some serious gun to compete with my semi-automatic wielding brother.. until it warms up and my water gun weapons already outclass him. |

Why wait for warmer weather. This seems the perfect opportunity to escalate the arms race. Water balloons and super-soakers will counter Nerf any day! I love the look of that N-Strike Maverick. I think I will pick a couple of those suckers up in spring to convert into gun controllers for the arcade cabinet. The arcade has officially taken enough abuse that parts are starting to fail intermitently. I'm going to pull the whole thing down and rewire/replace components in spring. |

I've been wanting one of the Mavericks for a while now- they look pretty awesome when they're painted, and Morgan learned about some really awesome metallic paint that works great on plastic from a suit of armor costume she did at work. But the arms race swiftly escalated when Morgan's best friend Kay brought her Nerf guns down from Utah over the weekend. She's got a Maverick and one of these bitches. Apparently Nerf wars and drinking were the two pastimes of the techies at the theater festival Kay worked at over the summer. But just remember the rules of engagement. |

Man. I'm just getting the little red X today. But I seem to recall that the rules say nothing about pistol whipping the opposition. |

Yes, I believe pistol-whipping is only expressly forbidden in the Marquess of Queensberry rules. |

Then the true path to victory lies in extinguishing your ammunition as quickly as possible, giving you the express right - nay, obligation! - to engage the enemy in melee. |

On that topic, the N-Force Marauder swords are pretty awesome, if stupidly expensive. I showed them to Morgan one day, and she convinced the person in charge of props to use them for the knight in the kid's show she designed last month. |

They've got a great weight to them, too. If they were half the price, they'd probably make pretty good LARP weapons. |

But then you'd be larping :( This is what my bro snagged: Posted Image I could either match him or get the belt fed one. |

Get the belt-fed one. Then you can do this with it. I was a bit unclear on how the Raider worked- is it basically pump-action firing? Edited by Kishi, Dec 29 2009, 08:59 PM.

Yup, pump and fire. You can hold the trigger and shoot with every pump so you can unload pretty quick. Not sure I need to shoot that fast and melt the thing but I like the paint job. There are some really cool steampunk designs from nerf guns that are even cooler. |
