After Nighthawk put the idea in our heads, Jenn and I have been searching for netbooks to take on our trips (and then she can no doubt usurp for her nefarious writing plans).

We've looked at a lot of different options, but so far this Asus model is standing out.

Expected battery life is 10.5 hours on a single charge. It runs Windows XP home, which I can live with. 1 GB ram is probably a little light and I'd rather that get upgraded, but the keyboard is 92% of a full keyboard, in spite of the small form factor. And the whole thing weighs under 3lbs, which is nice for travel. And...did I mention a 10.5 hour battery life on a single charge?

And according to the user comments, lots of people are reporting 8-9 hours battery life with charge to spare during their regular usage. I like that.

Not sure whether to order now, or wait and see if it goes on sale more for Boxing week. We've put aside enough money in our Tech fund to cover the current cost...dare I get greedy and hope for a steeper discount after Christmas?

One of my friends has an Asus netbook, and he really loves it. They're obviously not set up for anything too intensive, but they're plenty for basic webbrowsing, writing, etc. Morgan wants to get one.

I forgot to tell you guys that Deb's sister got one for use around the house and she loves it. I was pretty impressed with it too. Very similar model to what you're looking at.

It is now en route to our house. We're placing informal bets as to what gear arrives first: the furniture, the carpets, or the netbook. I have a sneaking suspicion it will be the reverse order... :P

A glass of my Laphroaig against a glass of yours says that it arrives carpets, netbook, furniture. :D

Done!

(Although I take this bet, knowing that the carpets are likely to arrive today or tomorrow. They just got scanned again at the Richmond warehouse. But the netbook has left Ontario...)

This contest is down to the wire. The delivery guy for the carpets couldn't find the mall yesterday, so they rescheduled for delivery today. I couldn't give him any more explicit directions, but the puzzling thing is that we have a regular UPS delivery guy that comes here every month. He must have been off for the day, because he knows our address. And the netbook is due for delivery today.

Looks like the first glass of laphroaig is courtesy of me. :D

Edit: Aw hells! By less than 5 minutes! The netbook is here NOW, too.

Nicely done, Nighthawk. How'd you slow down the netbook delivery, slash their tires or something? :)

No, he sent the girl from the day before, who couldn't find the mall to deliver the carpets, while the carpets were delivered by our regular delivery guy today. :D

Considering the time windows for expected delivery that were involved, and the fact that the two shipments came from the same delivery service but different drivers, I find the entire photographic finish to be highly amusing.

Also, the new netbook looks awesome. But that shiny top is going to do nothing but attract fingerprints and smudges. I think I'm going to look for a skin to apply.

Yeah, the only thing I'm not crazy about with Codex (yes, I named my laptop, is there a problem?) is that she's got a really shiny cover that smudges like crazy. Alas, I'll live with it.

That's your excuse to keep rubbing her, isn't it?

"Oh, I'm just polishing my laptop. What? Why yes, polishing with my crotch does create a more even finish."

I don't know about that.

I saw her and little Steven and Joanna 'round the back of my hotel. Oh yeah.

Dammit, Lance, The Fratellis cannot fix everything!

Well, okay, they pretty much can. I'll let it slide this time.

This was typed (carefully, with my big clumsy fingers) on my new little friend, who is only 10" long and weighs under 3 lbs.

And when you give it a descriptor like 10" long and 3 lbs, you know women everywhere just sat up and took notice.

I cannot quite decide if I like the carpets or not. They are the perfect size for the space - that aspect is great. But they do not match any of the product photos - either online or in print. They are still in the same colour family as the rest of our decor, but the colour is not nearly as vibrant as the photos would lead you to believe. They look a little washed out, compared to our other reds. However, they still do the job of lightening the darkness of our hardwood floor, and they still pull from the same colours in the room...yeah, I cannot quite decide.

Like I said, I need a full sized keyboard. I make enough mistakes as it is on a regular laptop :P
