That place we call Canada, though the natives are reputed to refer to it as, strangely, "Canada". Kinda makes you think. But not too much.

Anyway, as I sit in a bookstore, defending my claim to both this table and the power outlet right behind me, I was watching the hordes of shoppers and started to wonder- since Canada doesn't have Thanksgiving in November, do you guys have the whole Black Friday hoopla?

No, crazy shopping is kinda spread out for the whole month of Decemeber. However, since 90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the border, a staggering number of idiots make the attempt to go south for the sales. So then they get to experience three stampedes for the price of one. One at the stores, and one for each crossing of the border.

The mind boggles...

I think the Boxing Day sales are our equivalent for Black Friday. Except, the stores got smart and most everywhere is a Boxing Week sale, so spread out the chaos.

A few of the electronic stores do the whole deep discount on limited stock of refurbished or returned items, but since those are usually refurbished or returned items, I don't bother getting into the line ups. And the sales are usually much better at other times of the year, if you regularly check NCIX and Tiger Direct.

Canada DOES have a Thanksgiving, it's just earlier in the year (October?)

So, uh, I take it that since you're going to college, you scored well on the science and math portions of those SATs... :D

Sadly, I scored highest on Reading Comprehension :(

How's that for proof that tests don't work as well as claimed?

I think it's proof that Canadians totally don't have Thanksgiving in November. :D

I have to say, I like our system. The US Thanksgiving is too close to Remembrance Day and Christmas, skewing too many stat holidays in a bunch. From May through January, Canadians have one Stat holiday each month. I like that extra day off each month. I would be even happier if we could somehow move one of the two stat holidays in December to the end January, beginning of February. But, oh well. This year I'm taking February off for the Olympics and fleeing the country, so it's all good.

There is no Remembrance Day so it's not close to it at all ;)

I thought it awfully suspicious one year that we just so happened to make Boxing Day (week) in Canada and Black Friday here. For not being born there, Elm sure has acquired the beady-eyed sneakiness of one of the Snow People.

Wait, she wanted to leave Atlanta to go to Canada in late December, and you didn't question if there was some ulterior motive behind it?

We went to visit her parents at Christmas time. That was the reasoning. And 9 months later I was a dad.

I was walking through the mall the other day, and The Brick (a chain of quasi-discount furniture stores) had Boxing Week sale signs up already. As in, they were already starting Boxing Week. Four weeks early. I thought that was stretching the notion a little far.
