I've read several different pundits that feel this is going to be a break out season for Atlanta. The darkhorse of the east! Which sounds a lot better than saying the team has tanked for enough years that it's finally got some talent. :D

A vancouver/atlanta match up in the Stanley Cup? Could be!

Also, I learned today that the Calgary Flames were originally an Atlanta expansion team before moving to Calgary. So every time the Canucks beat the Flames (which they didn't last night) I can rejoice at the humiliation of two cities! Booyah!

What, just being from Alberta isn't humiliation enough?

I'm going to have to hassle some folks about going to see the Coyotes play this year. You know, before they move back to Canada.

I already checked the schedule to see if I could fly down for some games against the Canucks. But the games in Arizona are both on Tuesdays and one is at New Years and the other is the week after we return from Japan - I pushed my luck asking for three weeks of vacation at once, I doubt I can snag another mid-week vacation immediately upon returning. :D

My brother and sister along with their SOs went to the Thrasher's opening game. I was given an evil look by Elmira when I said I should tag along being that she was laying in a hosptial bed and all.

I was asking them if Atlanta made any good moves in the off-season and they all looked at me and shrugged, "They did nothing". So I wished them fun at seeing their first official loss and went about my fatherly duties.

I'm kinda surprised the Coyotes beat the Penguins last night. I should be surprised at that, right?

I dunno. The new coach for the Coyotes is pretty good, the team has some respite to the buyout process, and it finally has a decent goalie. They lost some scoring talent on the back end, but last season they were in contention up until the final couple weeks when they imploded beautifully. Right about the time that the relocation talks started, coincidentally. :P

15. Dollar. Tickets.

That is what the Phoenix Coyotes were charging for upper bowl to the home opener and the price of admission got you pompoms and a t-shirt. It costs more than $15 to get into a Vancouver Giants game, sans the t-shirt and poms.

I don't even know how much a Canuck ticket costs these days. Every time I've tried to buy they are already sold out.

And the amazing thing was that was the price, straight-up. They actually dropped all the "convenience" fees for that one. I wish I'd gotten to go, since apparently the regular ticket prices have gone up considerably from last year. Sorry, Coyotes, but baseball tickets are cheaper.

I checked out the standings and the Coyotes are off to a great start. Maybe hockey in the desert just doesn't draw fans.

The Coyotes had an awesome season last year, too, up until the final playoff push when they collapsed. Hockey in the desert doesn't seem to be a very good draw.

I think Phoenix has great potential to hosts lots of sports teams but they got kicked in the face with the collapse of the construction industry. Sports organizations need to examine their ability to expand as they seem to have been opening up shop in cities that need to grow larger still.

-Houston lost the Oilers and should never have gotten another team. Houston has gone downhill as a city fast. It always came out of recessions weaker.
-Jacksonville. Where's Jacksonville? They have an NFL team too.
-Florida has TWO hockey teams! That's just dumb. It's hard for any sport to compete with the NFL and SEC football schedule.
-The Carolinas suffer the football schedule as well as an intense college basketball team.
They seem to be maxed out with teams. They need Charlotte to grow as an even bigger city before taking on much more.
...the list goes on.

And meanwhile there isn't any expansion into Canadian markets that can support additional teams. :P

They keep talking about moving the Buffalo Bills to Toronto but it's always just talk. Not sure Toronto even cares about football but Buffalo really is a crap place for an NFL team.

Can't we just give Buffalo to Canada instead? I mean, who would really notice?

I have to say, I don't enjoy football much to begin with. But American football is really, really dull for an already dull sport.

It is humorous watching some of the NFL defensive backs that come up to play in the CFL, though. They're used to no yards on the line up, so the other guy has nowhere to go but into you. Only, CFL lines up a yard apart. That's plenty of room and time for a deft rusher to make a move and roll off you, and sack the QB. And the guy is standing there looking sheepish.

I was actually discussing this with a friend today. She's willing to put up with my baseball, but she just finds football boring.

I can tolerate people not liking the sports I do but if they enjoy soccer, I draw the line there. You can't like soccer and expect to be taken seriously.

I do find it interesting that Lance doesn't like baseball or football. Of all people I thought he'd appreciate the strategies and intricacies of the plays. But it is good to note that if we gave the players swords, he'd abandon hockey in favor of them.

The only interesting part of soccer is when it ends in a 0-0 tie and you get to have a shoot-out at the end. That's the best five minutes of the whole seventeen hour match. (I can accept people who like soccer in Britain, but that's just because I assume that it's an excuse for them to get piss drunk and brawl.)

Tomorrow, I'm going to watch a vintage baseball league play. They use 1860s rules, it's awesome.

There was a movie called Rollerball with Michael Caine, but wasn't there also a movie or book called Murderball where the game of football had morphed into a 2 team gladiatorial event with spiked shoulder/elbow pads and the likes?

Michael Caine wasn't in Rollerball or the recent remake. Murderball is a documentary of paraplegics playing a modified rugby game on a basketball court that is pretty rough. There is a Roller Ball Murder which was the short story Rollerball was based on. The Rollerball game within the original story always involved murdering the other team. Is that what you're thinking of? I couldn't find a lethal modified football but it sounds more awesome than the Rollerball remake.

Andrul is thinking of James Caan, and the description sounds a lot like Rollerball. The original was awesome. But I'm biased in favour of 1970s anti-utopian drama. :D

The sequel took all of the social critique and cut it entirely from the story. :(

I never watched the original and stayed away from the remake after I saw the stars were Chris Klein and L L Cool J. I suspected nothing good was salvaged. I need to watch the original.
