D&D Online is now free. I don't know why, I guess there were too many free mmo's these days for it to start competing with WoW and Evercrack. But the caviat is that if you want to play a favored soul, monk, warforged, or drow you have to purchase them. You're also restricted to 2 characters unless you purchase more slots. Things like this is very common amongst the free mmo's and doesn't surprise me at all.

Interface:
The interface is fairly standard with the exception of movement. Unlike WoW, etc... you can't just click on where you want to go. Movement is performed by the arrow keys although you can hold down the right mouse button to steer with the mouse.

Levels:
I'm not sure about the leveling system. My cleric is level 1, rank 4. Not sure if you go up ranks between levels or what but he's not gained any hp/mp/spells.

Character creation:
This is a multi-step process that the system walks you through quite well. You select if you want melee, spell, or specialist which breaks down into classes like fighter, cleric, and sorcerer. You then select what path you want to take which automatically distributes stat points, etc... or you can select to customize. The system very nicely tells you how good each class/path is for playing solo which is good for loners like me. Warpriest is the only one rated Excellent for solo so that's what I chose for my first character. I did find it kind of interesting that Rangers are listed under Specialists.

Quests:
I've only done a few starter quests. They seem to be pretty standard except that each one can be done multiple times at 4 different difficulty levels. I did the town storage quest 3 times successfully, died a painful death trying it on the Elite setting when 4 zombie giant rats mobbed me.

You can create your account and download the installation here.

Oh, you can select the 2.8G or 3.8G installation file depending on your system. I downloaded the standard file and the graphics are decent even on the near minimum settings I have it set to.

Atari and Turbine are in lawsuits about the whole DDO thing. Turbine is bearing the weight and looks like they'll continue supporting it without Atari as the next D&D MMO is in the works (Atari is going solo this time I think). When I get more time I'm going to check it out. Remind me if I don't. I read that much of the game requires getting a standard group together.

I just now advanced to 2nd level. The game mirrors the wotc mechanics really closely with the exception of using spell points instead of fire and forget. When you advance you have the option of continuing along your chosen path which automatically selects feats/skills or striking out on your own. I'm sticking with the default Warpriest path for now. I might try a sorcerer as my 2nd character but I suspect while soloing it's going to be a lot of magic missiles followed by running away before firing again. If you're not in a group sharing a quest then you get your own instance all to yourself so you're not having to share the loot with other players. Oh, and multiclassing is fully supported although I don't plan to try twinking just yet. I think a rogue with a level of bard or sorcerer would be nice for solo work. Shield spell from sorcerer or bard healing would both be handy for a rogue to have :)

Also, from watching the chats, rogues get sneak attack as long as they don't have aggro, no need for flanking.

I've been playing for a bit. I've got a rogue 2/fighter 1- I needed the free feat for Weapons Finesse, and the extra hit points didn't hurt. It's pretty fun, and not bad for a free game.

What server are you playing on, Andrul?
