The Final Fantasy Distant Worlds tour is coming to Vancouver and we have tickets. Right centre, dress circle. Gorgeous view of the stage. And a very impressive concert by all accounts.

Concert preview

Although Jenn did sit through Carmina Burana with me one year for my birthday, this is probably the closest I'll ever come to dragging my friends and family to an opera. I mean, sure: the action all happens on a screen and happens to be animated, but it's still got operatic qualities!

Hardly. Nobuo Uematsu's orchestrations are incredible. Final Fantasy has some of the most melodic sound tracks of any video game. The sheer volume of arrangements and orchestrations based on his music is a good indication of the quality and endurance of his work. His work is easily on par with Koji Kondo (Mario Bros, Zelda) in terms of establishing a definitive 'sound' for video game music/genre.

Yeah, no matter what you think about the games themselves, they've got some pretty kick ass music.

I was subjected to so many hours of that music that any time I hear it now I have to make a will save vs. going berserk.

In thirteen games main games, plus about seven handheld exclusives, you managed to listen to all of the original songs so many times that you don't like any of the 100+ hours of musical content? I call B.S.

It is good quality and professionally solid pieces that are quite excellent. However, try sleeping when you're absolutely exhausted and you're dumb brother is up playing the game all night long and you're stuck in the same room together.. you can't beat him because you're so exhausted.. and the constant fight scenes popping up with the repeated music over and over and over... oh my god I should have killed him that night. I haven't been right since.

And THAT'S what I'm talking about. Zerxes played FF9 enough to complete it twice, the 2nd time he completed all the side quests including the card collection. I asked and he mentioned that he also played the earlier ones with the terrible, repetitive music a lot too. You lose the call, pay $50 to the Benevolance Charity Foundation.

Also, Zerxes calls FF10 a good movie.

Blasphemy!!!! All Final Fantasy music is good. I've played 1-X2 and have yet to hear a bad song. Calling FF10 a movie is not right. It is a great game with great cinematic cut scenes. If you want a Final Fantasy movie watch Advent Children or The Spirits Within.

I love the FF series, but I gotta agree about X. It was more movie than game.

I have X and X-2, but have yet to play them. Final Fantasy 12 was tremendous, but I don't think they're going to go back to the quasi-real-time/turn-based action sequences again. Which is a pity, because the gambit system of programming AI and the sheer elegance and fluidity of the combats were incredible.

Zerxes told me X has about 12 hours of game play and 70 hours of cut scenes. I'm pretty sure he's exaggerating.

I don't think it's quite bad. Final fantasy games are usually pretty good about having lengthy game-play segments, even if you don't hunt down all the dinguses and widgets for the side-quests.

We enjoyed playing Eternal Sonata for the 360 and it's combat was really fun compared to most turn based JRPGs. It did have cut scenes that were excruciating long with lots of focusing on one character and camera panning when it wasn't giving a history lesson on Chopin and the revolution. If the writers would quit trying to be so ridiculously serious, I could handle it better.

I'd have to say that, of the ones I've played, FFXII is my favorite. I love the combat, and the cut scenes aren't very long.

Plus, you've got airships and the opening has chocobo-mounted cavalry. I mean, come on, chocobo-mounted cavalry! I've got the chocobo stats they put in one of the issues of Dragon a few years ago, and by god, one day I'm going to convince a DM to let me buy one in game.

Wark!

Besides, after the worg incident, Diric's leaning towards finding a mount that's got a little more in the way of offensive power. So, if you guys come across any griffons or amenable dragons, I'd appreciate the heads up.
