We will be using a 'sub-space' for most faster then light technoligies. Regardless of what tech or method you pick or create for FTL, it will utilize sub-space. Think of normal space as a tarp covering a very shallow pool, then think of sub-space as the liquid that fills the pool. This 'liquid', allows for matter and energy to travel at limitless speeds. Just to move through subspace takes loads of energy for alittle bit of mass. So while this makes communication and sensors capable of traveling vast distances in a short amont of time, travel is inpractical However there is still hope for FTL travel. Now think of gravitational bodies as wieghts sitting on the tarp. As these bodys shift and orbit eachother, they pull and bend sub-space. This bending causes the sub-space to become hyperactive between the two gravities. This 'Hyper-Space' flows like a current in both directions at the constant speed of light. Vessels can then ride these currents, and accelerate faster then the speed of light with much less effort. These lanes are found between large gravitational bodies such as solar systems, and most homesystems have three or four branching off of them, while other systems have one or two. Regardless of how advanced your ship is, it always is teatherd to normal space. In other words it takes constant power to remain in sub-space, there is no breaking down and getting stuck.
