I wrote this quite a while back Rating: 12+ Story Reviews: 1 Chapters: 2 Characters: Lupin, Sirius, A. Longbottom, F. Longbottom, Lily, James, Pettigrew, OC Genre(s): General, Humor, Romance Era: Marauders Pairings: James/Lily Warnings: Scenes of a Mild Sexual Nature, Contains Spoilers Chapter 1 James James Potter stared depressed into the mirror in his dormitory in Gryffindor Tower. He was a seventh year, Head Boy, one of the most popular boys in school, top student and yet… had been chasing the same girl for about four years. “What is it with her?” he asked not for the first time in the last few years to his three best friends, Sirius, Remus and Peter, the other three members in the little group they had nicknamed themselves in first year as “The Marauders”. “She’s just not interested at the moment, mate,” Sirius replied jumping off his bed and tugging James away from the mirror and towards the door. “Don’t worry, if you start behaving more… well… less like James Potter, then maybe it’ll happen,” added Remus. “I thought you had to act yourself around girls to get ‘em to like you?” James argued back. “Well… you should act like you act around us around her, you act like the ‘James Potter’ we all see on the Quidditch field, you know the one that is super cool and bullies people just for the fun of it.” Remus said bluntly back. “I don’t bully people just for the fun of it; I think we have all grown out of that stage. Well maybe we do hex Snape, but he deserves it, he’s a right git” “Well whatever, you need to start acting mature, like, around her,” said Peter, looking up from his Cauldron Cakes he had nicked from the basement of Honeydukes earlier. It was the end of Saturday on the third week of term of their seventh and final year at Hogwarts. Sirius and Peter had snuck down to Hogsmeade in the secret passage way to nick some Firewhisky, Butterbeer and sweets. Whilst this was happening Remus and James had been outside, enjoying the last days of the summer and the last warmth. They had sat under the large beech tree in the grounds, Remus reading a book and quoting funny passages of it out to James, while James murmured things like “Mmmmm” and “Yeah” not paying any attention to him in the slightest. James had sat there watching Lily Evans, a fiercely red headed, green eyed beauty who happened to be Head Girl and hated James with a passion. James had watched her all afternoon without her noticing and remarking on her beauty and the funny things she was doing while she chatted animatedly to her friends, Remus murmuring things like “Mmmmm” and “Yeah” and paying absolutely no attention to him whatsoever. At the end of the afternoon, James had wandered over to the girls, Lily, Mary and Alice, rumpling his hair as usual and hitching a smirk onto his face. “Potter, funny, I don’t remember asking you to join us,” Lily had said as soon as he had got there. That’s a bit unfair, did I really deserve that? James found himself asking as he forced himself to look into those beautiful green eyes. He looked down immediately, they always made him jittery and on edge to say something really funny, really fast. He always talked fast around her, and it was never at usual speaking volume either, sometimes he found himself talking really loudly to her, and at others he was talking really quietly to her so she would always be asking for him to “speak up”. She never put the odd speaking levels down to being nervous about speaking in front of her either. If he spoke to loud it was because he was so obviously showing off and showing everybody that he could get any girl without trying. “Er – well – you know I thought as we were all seventh years and we only have a year left in each others beautiful company, that we should spend our time together, so Remus and I would like to invite you lovely young ladies to join us under the beech tree we were sitting under,” He replied, just managing to keep his voice to a controlled speed, but as always the volume was just a little over the top. “Really, it doesn’t look as if Remus is bothered,” remarked Lily coolly. James felt his face reddening as he followed her gaze to where Remus was propped up against the tree quite obviously absorbed in his book and completely oblivious to the conversation going on a few metres away. “Well if you don’t want to, we could always go into Hogsmeade together, I heard there’s a trip soon… or we could…” he started backtracking fast at the look on her face, oops, wrong move, “or we could… practice some Transfiguration or… or study together in the library…or….” Great date you had planned for the last four years, a date at the library, no wonder she’s not looking that pleased. “I don’t think so Potter, I am fine working on my own, and as you kindly pointed out, I have two lovely lady friends who can help me with any homework that I feel I might be falling behind on.” She said coldly. “I’ll see you at Prefect rounds later,” Lily took her leave marching up to the castle as the sun began to sink and it started to get chilly. Alice and Mary scurried after her, muttering their apologies and calling for Lily to slow down. James wandered back to Remus and they left shortly, James telling Remus what had happened with the girls. They had run into Sirius and Peter in the boys dormitory and were just preparing to go down to dinner. “Oh Peter you pig, its dinner time and you’ve just had a packet of Cauldron Cakes,” Remus complained loudly. “You sound just like my mother,” sneered Peter back. “I’m not worried about your appetite, its just I wanted some Cauldron Cakes later,” grumbled Remus back. They stopped consoling James on the way down to dinner; the subject was forgotten to everyone, apart from James, until they reached the Great Hall. Lily Evans was there chatting away with her friends again. “Don’t worry, Prongsie mate, she’ll see you aren’t the git you used to be soon enough,” Sirius whispered quietly into his ear as they sat down as close to the girls as they could get without being noticed too much. Peter and Remus had started up their bickering again as they had entered the Great Hall. It had become noticeable of late that Peter and Remus usually the quieter of the group had become a lot more argumentative and Peter had become much more on edge lately. Peter was usually the most relaxed of the group. Remus was always diving into a book at any opportunity and always keen to work. Sirius and James, naturally talented, spent most of their time inventing hexes and practicing them on their favourite target, Severus “Snivellus” Snape. Peter would spend most of his time hanging around the others, joining in and catching up on homework that needed to be handed in the next day. Some people wondered why Peter was a Marauder, he wasn’t exactly cool, and he wasn’t clever like the rest of the group, yet he was part of the gang’s secret. A secret which had to be kept guarded closely and which no one knew about, except for themselves: Remus was a werewolf and hadn’t managed to keep it away from his three friends when he had first joined Hogwarts had led the other three to become Animagus. Once a month they let Remus loose in the grounds and transformed themselves into their animals: James – Prongs, the stag; Sirius – Padfoot, the great black dog and Peter – Wormtail, the rat. After dinner they left to go back to the Common Room, Remus had finished all his homework for the weekend and read another book while the others made a start. James had nearly finished his Charms essay when he left with Remus, just after Lily, to go and start the prefect rounds. He met the other prefects and started rounds with Lily. “Look, Evans I mean Lily, I am sorry about today,” He began, but he was cut off half way through his apology. Oh Merlin, I’m gunna get it now for even opening my mouth. “Don’t be sorry Potter, it was my fault I was really quite short with you earlier.” Lily began her apology. James was quite taken aback. “So… can I talk now?” James said slyly a smirk beginning to form on his lips, the first one in quite a few hours. “Well there’s nothing stopping you is there? I mean I can’t exactly Spellotape your mouth can I?” Lily replied, trying to stop herself from smiling at him. “Well you could try,” said James hopefully. “I mean, you could try Spellotaping my mouth together to stop me from talking,” he added, realising his mistake as soon as it had come out of his mouth. Sod it. Now she thinks I’m perving or something, he thought as he noticed small creases appear in between her eyebrows as her smile became steely. “Lily, I didn’t mean it like that, really I didn’t,” he said, trying to cover up his mistake again. “What? I don’t understand James, what else could you mean?” Lily said playing dumb. James decided to ignore it and moved the conversation on again. “So, how are Alice and Mary?” “Potter, you always ask that question, now could you please pick an interesting topic” “Sorry, can’t think of one,” he answered cheekily. “Why don’t you start a conversation, unless of course you want to spend the rest of the patrol in silence?” “As I am talking to you, Potter, I wouldn’t really mind not talking.” James’ hurt must have showed somehow on his face because Lily stopped and turned to look at him. “Sorry,” she muttered, apologising again. Is it just me or do we spend all our time together arguing? James thought to himself as they moved on again in silence. Since they had come back to school, Lily as Head Girl and James as Head Boy, the latter had seemed like an odd choice to nearly everyone, they had spent much more time in each others company, and James had managed to stop having the allergic reaction of asking her out whenever they came within ten feet of each other. He had also calmed down and become much more responsible and, he hoped, he had shown that side of him to her as well. “So… how are Remus, Peter and Sirius?” Lily asked, breaking the silence. “Merlin, no wonder you get so annoyed with that question, I never realised just how annoying it is ‘til now,” James joked back, glad that they were talking again. “I did try and tell you earlier,” said Lily pretending to be exasperated. “Hey – are you hungry?” James said, a sudden thought occurring to him. “Er – a bit, I s’pose,” replied Lily, a little confused. “So am I, I didn’t have that much dinner, and Peter ate all the Cauldron Cakes we had. What do you say to a bit of a midnight snack?” “But, our rounds aren’t finished, its not even midnight, James,” complained Lily. “C’mon, its freezing, and we’re both hungry, and its nearly midnight,” persuaded James with a quick glance at his watch. “And, you know you’re having fun with me,” he said with a quick ruffle of his hair, the smirk already formed on his lips. It wasn’t difficult to persuade Lily, James could tell that she was cold, so he conjured up some fluffy emerald slippers with stars on and he stripped off his jacket and slung it on to her shoulders, rubbing her arms as he did so. He was now left in a tight fitting white t-shirt, which showed off his muscles rippling underneath, and his blue and white striped pyjama bottoms Chapter 2 Lily Lily pulled his jacket gratefully around her, and she didn’t mind too much when James rubbed her arms. She was grateful that she now had feeling back in her arms, even if it came at the price of having James touch her. She walked with James, always half a pace behind, when he started leading her down a corridor decorated with cheerful pictures of food, that she recognised to be near the Hufflepuff Common Room somewhere. “Where are we actually going?” she stopped and asked apprehensively, pulling the jacket around her with a slight shiver. “You’ll see, come on,” he grabbed her hand and she couldn’t help noticing that he had very powerful muscles, all though she hoped she would never notice it again. He led her to a big painting of a bowl of fruit. As she wriggled her hand out of his he spoke again. “Tickle the orange, go on.” She glared at him and did as he said. Nothing happened. “What’s s’posed to happen James?” “Nothing,” he said smirking all over his thin face. “Now tickle the kiwi,” She lifted her hand half heartedly and tickled the piece of fruit. Nothing happened. “If this is a joke James, then the jokes on you, I’m leaving.” “OK. OK,” James held his hands up in surrender. “Tickle the pear,” Frustrated with his orders she began to back away. “I’m going,” she said. “Lily, please, third time lucky, please just tickle the pear.” He pleaded with her. “Fine,” she said and turning round smartly she tickled the pear before he could do anything else. To her complete surprise, it giggled and slowly changed shape in to a door handle. “Wha-” she began but James had already grabbed her hand and led her inside a cavernous room, with four long tables that were in the exact position of the four house tables, which, Lily guessed, must be above them. “Ah - sir, miss, what can Lewey the house-elf get you?” said a small elf at their feet. “Hey Lewey, can we get some remains of dinner please, neither of us had very much,” James said with a smirk on his face. “Yes sir, please take a seat.” They sat at the nearest table and Lily realised that she was still holding hands with James. She let go immediately but as soon as she let go she wished that she hadn’t, his hands were warm and safe, and they comforted her when she had been brought to this new place. She couldn’t help but feel a little nervous now she had let go. It didn’t take long for Lewey to come back, with some pork pie, the remains of a treacle tart, some apple crumble and some ham. They both tucked in gratefully and Lewey left, leaving them quite alone. Lily now realised that she was getting her usual nerves when she was alone with boys, especially when we’re in complete silence, which was indeed the case. She busied herself with eating food; treacle tart was her favourite, but the other things were good too. She soon realised that treacle tart was James’ favourite thing too. Great, yet another thing we have in common. When there was only a small piece of Treacle tart left, James felt the need to say something. “That piece is mine,” he said, pointing out the treacle tart with his fork. “No way Potter, you’ve had most of it,” Lily replied, hitting his fork with hers and batting it away. “Ah – Evans, you’ve watched way too many muggle pirate movies,” he said. “You need to win a sword fight like this,” he said bringing his fork away from hers and jabbing it into the tart, which broke neatly in three. “Alright, I’ll be kind Evans, you can have the small bit, and I will have the two big bits,” he said smirking all over again. “Oh no you don’t Potter. I will have one big bit, you will have the other big bit and then you will give me the remaining piece because you are a gentleman.” A fair compromise I’d say. “OK, I’ll have one big bit, you will have the other, but I refuse to be a gentleman and let that last piece of treacle tart slip away from me and into your mouth,” he said cockily. “I know, we’ll play a game at the end to decide who gets it.” Alright, but he won’t know what’s hit him, playing games with me. Lily nodded to show her agreement in the matter of deciding who got the last piece, and chose what she thought to be the marginally biggest of the two big pieces. She put it into her mouth delicately, as he popped his into his mouth, not quite so delicately. “Alright, a competition kind of game,” he said musingly. “I know a muggle one,” Lily said tentatively. “It’s called rock paper scissors.” She looked at his face cautiously again before ploughing on with the rules to rock paper scissors. “Get it?” she asked “So… one of us says 1, 2, 3 and then we both make a shape with our hands,” he demonstrated the shapes for each object, “and rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper and paper beats rock. Right?” “Right, so best of three?” “Yep, you ready to be beaten little Evans? Let’s go,” “1, 2, 3” they said together, Lily put down paper and James put down rock. “Aha, Evans, I thought you were muggleborn? You should be good at this game.” He said smirking at her. Just you wait, I’ll show you, Lily found herself thinking. “So, Evans, if I win this one then that piece of treacle tart is mine, if you win this one then we are drawing and everything hangs on the last one?” he asked “Yep,” Lily said, letting a secret smile form on her lips. “1, 2, 3,” they said together, Lily put down paper and James put down rock. “Haha, I win that one,” she said putting her hand around James’ rock. They both sat still as they realised they were holding hands, and James’ smirk turned to look of longing. Lily’s heart was pounding in her chest; it takes just one small touch to set you off she thought angrily at her heart as she let go of him. She tried to dismiss it but she couldn’t help thinking that earlier in the evening when he had touched her, her heart hadn’t been bouncing in her chest. That’s because he was the one touching me, this time I was the one who was making the bold move of touching him first, and it would be the same with any guy, not just Potter. “So, what is it now? A draw? Well well well, we are playing for the last piece of treacle tart and this is the decider,” James said trying to break the ice that had formed in between them. It worked; Lily smiled back, dismissing her thoughts, her heart already beating at normal speed. “1, 2, 3,” they cried together, James lay down paper and Lily made pointed her finger at him crying “Avada Kedavra,” James was stunned, and before he could prevent it from happening she scooped the last piece of treacle tart into her mouth, and explained in between gobbling, that he was dead, and there was no defending it. Oh James Potter, I got you good! Lily thought to herself. James was still looking completely stunned. “But you can’t do that,” he kept saying as he finished off the last morsels and crumbs. “Mmmmmm that was a really good last piece of treacle tart, mmm they must have put extra sugar on that piece.” Lily said, trying to rub it in as much as possible. “Mmm, now I’m going to have this last slice of crumble, all to myself,” “Oh no you don’t, I can’t believe you managed to get that piece of treacle, and now you will definitely not be having any crumble,” he said grinning, and with very quick reflexes he stood up and grabbed her around the waist, swinging her around and upside down into a fireman’s lift. He paraded around the kitchen laughing at her shrieks as she tried to slap his back hard enough to let her down. “James – what do you thi- Potter, let me dow- aahh,” she shrieked hitting his back, “Potter, if you don’t put me down this instant I will scream so loud that I will wake the whole castle up,” she said bravely. He stopped spinning around and said. “Sorry Evans, no one will be able to hear your scream, there are silencing charms all around this room, there always have been, it means that the house-elves can have a little privacy,” he said. “Please put me down James, I don’t like it up here.” Lily wailed again. It’s really scary, I know he’s strong, but he could drop me at any point. Lily found herself thinking of pictures of her lying on the hard stone floor with blood pouring from her head. As these thoughts started to whirl around her head she suddenly felt her position being changed as he gently whirled her about, her hair being sent flying in all directions, and stood her back on her feet. She was surprised to find tears is her eyes and she could tell that when he too looked into her eyes that he was surprised to find tears there. Now she was aware of it, she realised just how fragile she was being and thought angrily he was only lifting me up and spinning me and it is so unlikely that he was going to drop me; I mean, look at those muscles. She found herself staring at his chest avidly, and then she caught herself and looked down, taking off his jacket and handing it back to him. He took it silently and his hand dropped to his side, the jacket not quite brushing the floor. “I’m sorry Lily,” he said quietly, “I didn’t know you were afraid of heights." “I am not afraid of heights, I just don’t… like them.” She finished somewhat lamely and quietly. She could feel the tears welling up again, and she brushed them away angrily. Why was I crying, I wasn’t even high up, and I am not afraid of heights. “Do you want to finish the crumble together?” James asked gently. “Yes please,” Lily muttered, and suddenly she knew why she was so upset, the evening with James had changed everything she had thought about him. He wasn’t arrogant or cocky well only slightly, she thought with a grin, he was much more gentle and funny and he really cared about people’s feelings. Just thinking this made her miss Sev, her once best friend. He had been like James is now but had turned nasty and evil and full of all his Death Eater plans, she had thought him really quite different to how he had turned out to be. The same could be said about James. They abandoned the benches and sat in silence on the table, leaning up against the back wall, taking it in turns to stab the crumble with their forks and break off the pieces and eat them. He’s actually a really nice guy Lily found herself thinking. But he wouldn’t be interested in me now, I’ve said “no” to him way too many times, and he’s been going off me all year, he used to ask me out every time he saw me, in fact today was the first time he asked me out all year. And now he thinks I am a wuss ‘cause I am afraid of heights. Well I’m not actually afraid of them, he just thinks I am. And I don’t like him in that way, he’s just a friend. Ew – Potter, a friend? |
