Well, in an attempt to provoke some conversation in this cyber-ghost-town, I figured I would blatantly abuse my admin powers by posting in the parents' section. It's good to be king. Heheh, anyway, I just thought it would be interesting to ask y'all the question: why homeschool? Because, in my experience, that's the first question "outsiders" have...if they say anything, that is. Two real-life questions I remember were "Why do people homeschool? Are they really that unsatisfied with the public schools?", and "Why do you homeschool? Don't you know that the [public school] enrollments are down this year?" Joe Schmoe on the street genuinely does not know our reasons for homeschooling, and conversely, our reasons for not government-schooling. So, to answer these people: why do you homeschool? What are the logical reasons for choosing that path? Or make it personal - what's the story of how you came to your decision to homeschool? Hopefully this thread will make us less of an enigma to any visitors we might get, as well as provide a bit of mutual encouragement... |

Wipe that smile off your face youngin' ! I will give this some thought. Even though we've been homeschooling for 17.85 years, I don't know that I've ever sat down and typed all the "Why's". Many of the reasons have changed since that yellow school bus pulled away, and you weren't on it. But the central focus remains, and that is to raise up a young man who honors God in all things. Why do I homeschool? When my son Josh was a baby, I decided I was not sending my son to a public school. I had lost confidence in my government's ability to do anything right and public schools were not wholesome places anymore. I wanted him to be in a place that reinforced our beliefs in God, not contradicted them. He did attend a private Christian school for 6 years and then has been homeschooled for the last 5 years. |

Wow, there really is not much activity on this forum...but I figured I would add my two bits on why of homeschooling. Let me start by saying that I have not 'officially' started homeschooling. But here are SOME of the reasons I will be (and not necessarily in this order): *The public schools are failing children's creative side *The public schools have taken God out of the picture *Public schools in a sense foster disrespect, disobedience, immorality, etc *Public schools are NOT part of the family and therefore do not have the FAMILY's best interest in mind *I enjoy my children immensely and sending them to public school has already taken away over 30,000 hours from us spending time together *The influences, attitudes, behaviors of other children in public schools are unacceptable and we do not wish our children to continue to cultivate those traits *There are many programs in public schools for 'learning challenged' (aka learning disabled, call it what you want) but not for 'gifted' (those that surpass the mediocre standards set by public schools) especially in small towns There are so many more reasons but I feel I would be repeating myself somewhat so I will stop there. Those are my thoughts |
