So, I'm really interested in using a quarter staff as a weapon, but I'm having difficulty finding rules regarding it. Would it be a double ended red blunt with no thrust attack? How would I be required to pad it? I enjoyed the spear yesterday, but if a quarter staff has to be padded like it on both ends, I could see it losing its speed advantage to the additional extra weight. Any one have any insight? Also, what is your favorite weapon/fighting style? What do you like about it? What are its advantages and disadvantages? Edited by Teremko Kjeldoran, May 20 2011, 09:36 AM.

The rules for a quarter staff are: 1. it will only count as a blue strike, regardless of the length or type of hit delivered. 2. IF it will have a stabbing tip (green strike), both ends MUST be a stabbing tip. I had a quarter staff years ago, and I really enjoyed the weapon. I used a fiberglass pole as the core, a pool noodle as a base for the striking end (no smartass comments, i know most of you don't like pool noodles), and two wraps of blue camp pad on top of that. Mine did have stabbing tips made of black computer foam, but it is not required. Make sure that you slightly pad the entire shaft or only have 30% of the total length non-padded, I used 1" pipe insulation wrapped with hockey grip tape. Even with the stabbing tips, it was very light and quick. As for my personal favorite style, RED WEAPON! Reason is simple, I'm 6'5", 275 pounds, and look intimidating with a 5 foot long war hammer in my hand. |

My personal favorite fighting style is sword and shield... very versatile and provides great defence. also it is great utility for small groups as you can defend your archers and spear men, in team battles I don't always get a lot of kills, but i still have fun because i am helping my teammates stay alive and get kills for themselves. if I do want to get kills i use my bow. if you like polearms i would recommend a spear or glaive over the quarterstaff. this is just because dagorhir rules kind of nerf the use of quarterstaves and make them less effective than they would be in real life. a spear is quick, has reach, and can penetrate armor. but you will be lacking in defense. a glaive will be a little slower but adds the ability to break shields and will make it easier to defend yourself when you get rushed by a shield man. but in the end it is just preference, so try some stuff out and decide what works best for you. |

ha! my war hammer is 6 feet long! also, in other news, the rules for a quarterstaff essentially render them fairly useless. because it is not a red, you cant break shields, even though it is a red sized weapon. also, you cant move it as freely as two, independent, blue weapons. i believe we have one sitting around somewhere(we never bring it cause its useless), however, before you build one try one out. ill see if i can find it and bring it |

Awesome! Thanks for the input. I think I'm going to check some YouTube tutorials and maybe give making a quarterstaff a shot. First things first though. I have a killer garb idea in my head, so I'll probably work on it, since I also already have all the materials. I can see your point about the red weapon. I like the idea of shield breaking, but I see myself doing much better with a double ended striking weapon. I know for a fact I don't have the hand eye coordination to be a dual wield fighter. Probably end up losing limbs to my own mistakes. |

And now I'm sad the rules shaft its use. I'd really like to give it a try if you guys could bring it next time. It may not be the best weapon, but I think I will have more fun with it. I guess we will see though. |

Also, keep in mind that no matter what weapon you choose, it can be useful if you use it effectively and practice with it. So I recommend you give it a try, and if you like it, stick with it. If you don't like it, just keep trying new things 'til you find a style you like. And don't just look at the rules of the quarterstaff as a weakness; you should also look at the rules of other weapons/armors as potential strengths of your weapon. Want an example of that, just ask Rurik to tell you about the time his unit took on a Roman Shield Wall with only bucklers and daggers! As for my favorite fighting style, I'm fairly new and haven't tried every style yet, but so far, I'm liking sword and shield. Like Grukar already said, it's good defense and flexible on the field. My only complaint with it is that it can be a little hard to work with on windy days, but i guess that just comes with the territory. |
