I agree with Magnus about the materials. there is no reason to use wall-mart camp pads when we have access to the foam at Tempe sales. it is way higher quality and it is actually cheaper. I understand you are in Tucson, however I think it would be worth finding a way to get the foam from Tempe sales (Magnus might be able to pick some up next time he is in phoenix?) For the cores, it is way cheaper to use pvc, and for cranking out a bunch of loaner swords this might be a better rout. However, for your own personal sword, I would highly recommend the fiber glass rods. it will cost about $10 but you will have a good lightweight core that will last you years. (I have been using the same core for about 4-5 years now.) |

Just a note: the home depot fiberglass driveway markers must be doubled up if it is a decent sized blue, otherwise it will fail for flex. |

Alright, so now, I think the task is to put together a loose calendar of what we would like to do by when so that we can really get things going. Before we start putting this calendar together, I would like to say, that I feel it would be most beneficial to wait on starting till next semester to start. Up in Phx we have found that its really easy to lose alot of people over the holidays. In addition I won't be there at that time. However, if you have some die hard recruits who you fear will lose interest if we don't serve their appetite for fake violence then we should probably do something before the semester ends. |

Seeing as the next semester is only 6-10 weeks away, depending on who's viewpoint you ask (at least in my experience), I think that would be a good. However, I do have a person or two who would probably like to see something happen, even something like putting together some garb and weapons. However, since starting a group takes time, and I may only have you here until May, I would like to get the group at least started as soon as possible. On a different note, I have a few questions. First of all, is there a specific material that you usually make your garb out of? Secondly, i've asked before, but can you give me any specifics on foam specifications for weapons, even something like the specifications of the foam you buy? I want to search around Tucson for something similar, partially so I can practice weaponmaking on my own, and partially so I could tell any prospective recruits here where to get foam. After all, no one wants to be told that they should wait until one of us goes to phoenix to pick up more foam before they start fiddling around with making their weapons. In addition, I've been reading the official rules regarding armor carefully, and i've been toying around in my mind with the idea of ringmail. I see no ways in which it would be against the rules, and I think it would be easy (albeit time-consuming) to make. However, as you are more familiar with what is and isn't allowed, I figured I should ask you before I take the liberty of making it. |

I'm sorry I made it sound like Tempe sales was the only place that you could ever ever get foam. its just that we use it and love it up here. However, I understand that you are excited about starting a new group and want to start making weapons as soon as possible, in that case I would recommend using the camp pads from big 5 sporting goods if you have any in Tucson. They are similar to walmart camp pads but I think they are a nicer foam, should be about 8$ in the camping section at big 5. If you can find another supplier of foam in tucson, this is what you are looking for EVA foam. for garb, most commonly people just use cotton broadcloth, you can get it at jo-anns for like 3-4$ a yard in any color you want. if you want to be more historically accurate, check out this forum thread, Natural Fabrics . |

Thanks Grukar. I'll take a look and see what I can find around here. Even if it is a little more expensive, I'm sure any members we recruit would be pleased to know that they don't have to drive all the way to phoenix for decent foam (They may even save the difference on gas alone, given the price of gas these days, but i digress). We do have a big 5 here in town, or at least we did last I looked. I'll stop by there some time and take a look at their camp pads. I know theres some tutorials for weapon making on the dagorhir website, but if you guys have any specific templates you use that work well, I'd appreciate taking a look at them. And hey, if worse comes to worst, there's always wal-mart! Edited by Cormac Elsinore, Nov 19 2010, 10:54 AM.

Btw, I do have my dag sword down here in tucson, if you want to get a feel for the density of the foam and construction materials. |

Sounds like a good idea. Besides, you and i probably SHOULD meet in person sometime before we have our first practice, eh? At any rate, I would like to take a look at your sword, and get a feel for what I should use, and the structure of it's construction. |

Also, where do you guys order your fiberglass rods from? I'm thinking i'm going to buy one to use as a core for my sword. |

typically for just a regular blue weapon we go to home depot and get fiberglass driveway markers. One thing you gotta remember when you do that though is that you have to double up the cores, otherwise they will fail for flex. |
