Direction or Advice; I need both; I have questions about the formation of a unit, people near my area, and advice in forming my unit.

Basically the most important thing will be making enough blue swords to start with, they are the most basic, and the most important of the weapons. As far as greens go, they would be nice, but i wouldnt worry too much about them for your first few practices

I'm inclined to side with Duer on this one, Magnus. I've done a bit of reading about the group, and I think he has a point when blue weapons and shields would be most important. A red or two would be ok as well, but I think we could do without greens for now.

Also, would we need any loaner garb? And about how much would you think it would cost to make those weapons, as well as a blue sword and shield for myself?

That's fine. I mentioned those greens and red because often newbies want to try as many weapons sets as possible. While I agree that blues are the core weapon, diversity leads to increased appeal.

Loaner garb is fairly simple (if you know how to sew that is). All you need is to slap together a couple of T-tunics and you are golden (http://dagorhir.com/HowTo/DagorhirTunic.htm).

As for cost, there is a pretty good foam supplier down in phx called Tempe Sales that we get our foam from. I think its like $7-9 bucks a yard which is a pretty good price for high quality foam.
I would say a good quality blue will cost
-$3 foam
-$10 core
-$1 tape
-$1 DAP (contact cement)
-$0.50 Fabric cover
For a total of $15.50

A shield will tend to cost more however their cost can vary wildly depending on size, shape, and materials. I would estimate that regular shield will be approximately double the cost of a blue.

Feel free to correct me if my estimates are off ladies and gentlemen.

I would also say that while blues are the core weapons, the other weapon types often draw more attention and food traffic.

Ok, that's not outrageously expensive. Would you be willing to go halfway on this one, or is that a problem for you, Magnus? In addition, I think if we are going to start advertising anytime soon, we might want to think of a name and theme for our unit.

In addition, I don't know if you had a place already in mind for weaponcrafting, but my family's house has a nice spacious workshop in our backyard, with my sister's sewing station that I doubt she'd object to letting us use, as well as plenty of workbench space. If we needed a place to manufacture our gear, it might be a good place, and my mother is fine with us using it for that purpose. In addition, my mother mentioned something about a place that sells foam here in town, and I was thinking I might go take a look. Could you give me a specific pointer as to what kind of foam we'd be looking for in that case?

Sorry if I'm asking a lot. I just want this to work, so I'm trying to learn all I can.

If you guys get a group together that want to try dagorhir out, I am more than willing to drive down for a Saturday or Sunday practice with some loaner gear to help get things started.

also, as far as the foam goes, I would not recommended buying any until you see a well built sword, and understand what kind of foam is needed. it is very difficult to find good foam for dagorhir weapons, I wouldn't want you to go out and spend a bunch of money on something you can't use.

Walmart blue camp pad, was $5.88 a roll, now closer to $7, found in the camping area. Not the $19 roll, or the $25 yoga mat, but the cheap foam mat. When cut right, can generate 3 blue swords. My tower punch is actually 6 rolls of blue foam glued together. The round punches I have cost about $30 per shield.

Fiberglass rods are a bit more pricy than pvc, but they last much longer. However, for your first few builds I'd suggest using 1/2" pvc. White is cheaper and as your hit calibration won't be very high they should last 4-6 months.

For a starting group, 9 blues and 2-3 shields should be fine. For the first few months you won't really have any personal gear, it will all be loaners until you find a combo that you like and are willing to drop the extra $ into to make quality equipment. That doesn't mean you make crappy stuff to start with, as a properly built shield can last years.

Also, I'm placing a fiberglass core order in a few weeks. I'll go ahead an order a few extra and send them your way, so you can get some poles and reds fielded by the new year.

As for asking the many questions. I was told once that everyone needs to ask questions to learn.

That would probably work. Even for loaner gear, it wouldn't need to be the highest quality. Maybe I'll scout out some potential practice grounds too, now that I've got my truck back (finally!!!)

Sry, for being MIA for the last couple days, this week has been busy. I don't have a problem helping to fund loaner weapons, however repairing loaner gear is a pain because no one wants to do it. It might be worth it to invest in slightly higher quality materials so that they last longer. You will have to worry less about screwing something up since I can be there to help you make them.

Also, I like the idea of having Grukar and the crew come down for a weekend, so that you and anyone you have gathered can see what you are getting into before you invest the money.

Also, just as a side note, you might like this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT0JCW0iEQA

Don't worry about being slow to respond to posts, Magnus. You've got a life of your own, as do I. And yes, I think having an experienced group put on a demonstration could be very valuable, not only as an intro, but also as a recruitment tool. If we were to advertise it a little and get a few people down here who wanted to find out more, it could help get the word out about our group.
